There is ways like shot peening and heat-treating the old rods to make them stronger. I don’t know enough about it but maybe Jim can explain.

I don’t know if I just had a bad batch of rods or the rods are weak? Get the rods if you are that far into your motor!!! I am still pulling pieces of aluminum out of my shoes. I was just accelerating slowly and than bang there’s hot aluminum, oil and coolant up my leg! I will have to post some photo...

I have not dissembled the motor yet but it is easy just to look in the big hole in the side! The rod broke just a little below the wrist pin (the narrowest part of the rod). I don’t know if you had your rods shot peened yet but I would look in to it! My motor was similar to yours Chrissy.

Oh Yes the 12r was in front of the 85FZ but not as much as you would think.

Good point Chrissy, I forgot about the exup. I can’t think of any reason why the 88 cdi would no work on the 89. I don’t think the rev limiter or advance curve would be that different.
