The adjustables I had simply had an insert in the top and bottom yoke that could be rotated 180 degress giving different offsets. I dont think there are any that actually alter the rake angle of the forks, the only way I could see that working would be to have inserts in the headstock that would eff...

Definetly sounds like the Starter motor to me. As Spook says take it out and bump start it, that way you will know if it is or isn't that. Good Luck with the swap. I have Dymag 5 spokes on mine, you will notice a big difference in the handling. As you say it is the best place to lose weight from the bike.
