fixed!

At last I`ve fixed the problem....
After changing the rad cap, ditching the thermostat, flushing the radiator & checking the water-pump, I had pretty much given up on ever getting this sorted! One of my friends is an excellent mechanic and he had a look at it for me. After 5mins he had found the ...

connections

That sounds like a dodgy electrical connection to me. Make sure the terminals on the battery are clean and lightly greased - Vaseline is best.
If that doesnt cure it, check all the connections to ensure they`re not corroded.

Re: hot stuff

Yup, I`ve cleaned my rad! I took it off, then blasted it with the garden hose from behind to clear all the crud. I also flushed it through in the same way. I`m pretty confident the rad isn`t blocked and the fins are all clear.

Re: hot

cheers for that, whyml, but I have changed the cap for a new one already, so I`m guessing thats not the fault. My bike seems to boil when the gauge reaches the red, I`m still worrying that the head may be porous but I havent done a gas or pressure test as yet.

Re: billet basket

No need to split the cases, it`s a piece of cake to fit!! Just drain the oil, remoce the R/hand engine cover and there it is!! You will probably need a special tool to hold the basket whilst undoing the centre nut though. I bought a pattern tool from my local bike shop for about £15, I think the gen...

Re: No lights!!

When I pulled the switch appart, it all looked ok inside, just a spot of corrosion on the contacts- the wires looked fine.
Being the tight git that I am, I`ll probably wait until it really gives up before buying a new one!!

Re: front sprocket bearing

The sprocket bearing, (and clutch basket bearing) is an interference fit on the output shaft and I think it has a pin that locates it in the caseing. Yes, you do need to split the cases! Had the same trouble on my old FZ750.
If it uses any oil, do the valve seals and rings at the same time.
</...

Re: hot

Good points guys!
As it`s done it ever since I`ve owned it, I would guess it`s not a jetting problem. I think I will definitely get a pressure leakage test done.
Cheers, I`ll keep you updated!

Re: Hot in town???

It was doing it before I pulled it apart and after the re-build, although it isn`t any worse, it`s no better!
I initially thouhgt it was the head gasket but when I looked at both the head and block I could see no signs of blow-through.
I fitted a new genuine head gasket, cleaned both surfaces ...

Hot in town???

Whenever I ride through town my bike over-heats, often boiling. This can even happen in mid winter! It`s done it ever since I`ve owned the bike (3years) and is really p***ing me off!
I`ve rebuilt the top end so am sure it`s not a head gasket fault, flushed the rad, wich was clean anyway, chacked ...

No lights!!

Hi guys, took the old girl out for a thrash yesterday, only to find my headlights not working!! I havent had a chance to have a proper look yet, but I`m guessing the switch is faulty- main beam works on flash/pass so It`s unlikely the bulbs have gone. I wondered if the switches on these bikes are a ...

Re: hone or rebore ???????

My engine had done 30,000 miles when I pulled it apart, the bores had a few very fine scores but otherwise looked perfect. Even the factory cross-hatching was clearly visible! Even so, with the engine at this stage, it seemed foolish not to re-hone. My friendly local mechanic honed it for free with ...

Re: Oil consumption to high ?????

Mine was using all it`s oil within 300miles! When I stripped it down, the bores and the rings looked perfect, but I figured as I`ve got it apart I may as well do it properly!
I re-honed the bores, fitted new rings and valve seals and now it doesnt use a drop of oil.
You must be kicking yoursel...

Re:Lapping etc.

If you`re a pretty competent home mechanic you should be able to do it yourself. I cleaned the ports up, but didnt polish them, I left a rough finish on them. I`ve seen a lot of debate over polishing or rough finishes and in my opinion a rough texture creates turbulance in the incoming charge, which...

Re: head work (chuckD, must read!!!)

This is exactly what I did to mine a few months ago!
Obviously you`ll be fitting new rings as well? It was pretty easy to clean up the ports with a Dremmel, I also matched the inlet manifolds to the ports, all I did was just take out any casting swarf and knife edged the inlets, then lapped in th...

Re: Valve clearances

I have just done my valve clearances after a top-end rebuild. I put in new rings (GTS1000 type) and valve guide seals in an attempt to cure my `95 EXUP`s excessive oil consumption.
After lapping-in all the valves, 6 of which were badly pitted on the seats, I checked the clearances. 4 valves were ...
