I didn't think about valve clearances but you may well be right - lack of compression when hot and possible preignition. The valves haven't been checked since the motor went in so worth a look. I think the noise is mechanical, its a sort of big rev then clatter, clatter, clatter on the slowdown. Its ...

Good news / bad news raceday at Taupo
Good news is that all the suspension work has paid dividends. Taupo is a fairly tight and technical track and the FZR felt like a different bike to the tank of a thing I rode there last year. Qualifying and first race went OK (I wasn't last!), a good time was had and I took five seconds off my perso...

Spook said How's the 900 engine coming on? Slowly. I now have a set of EXUP rods/pistons/barrels and am trying to decide whether to use them instead of the Genesis part. Indecision is a terrible thing. Plus I'm struggling to get time in the machine shop to modify bits. Plus I have two other projects...

Thanks for the support guys. In truth I don't take it all too seriously, a long time ago I wanted to be a hero but then I realised that I never was going to be Valentino Rossi (or perhaps that should be Eddie Lawson, for people my age ;) ) and perhaps I should just concentrate on enjoying myself. Li...

Lighter wheels are at the very top of my wishlist, and with the British pound getting cheaper and cheaper a set of Dymags might be worth thinking about. Of course then you have to get the alloy centred lightweight discs to go with them and I'll bet they're not cheap. Higher profile rear tyre is a go...

The next challenge is to see if I can make the suspension better still. I've changed the preload a bit but there is a ton of adjustability in the Ohlins to muck about with. I'm not sure I can do much about the steering, I'm at the point now where the rear ride height is as high as it can go (rear sh...

At last a fine trackday!
First sunny trackday of the year - we had one day previously but it was only any good for running in my wets... Good day out this time, mostly. Got to the track and the bike wouldn't start, found just 5 volts in the battery despite being on charge all night! Fortunatley there's a good bike shop only...

Hi Ace, Something I've found in the past is that a lot of CNC machines buffer feed through the RS232, they use a signal generated by the control to control the speed of the data stream by starting and stopping it as the buffer fills. A USB port won't support this function and will just pour the data...

Hey Spook, nice bike. Have you seen this: http://www.twostrokeshop.com/Aprilia_RS500_2008.htm Forget that clunky old V4, this is the way to go. I was really keen to get one myself but too many projects already, including in fact one of those clunky old V4s. The RZ500s are great when they go, but if ...

What is cheese whiz??? Vegemite spread on toast is the perfect thing to go with your morning cup of tea (another thing you don't seem to have in the US!) and it is used to spice up bland sandwiches in cheap lunch bars. It can also be used in cooking to flavour up stews and the like and no doubt ther...

Hey Spook keep up the good work. If you need any help with design / machining let me know. I've got a couple of spare FZ/FZR clutch drums I'd be happy to try modifications on. A slipper clutch sounds like a good plan for the 911, 6th to 2nd at the end of Pukekohe's back straight is always a worry. B...

What is an FZR500???
I recently picked a some old Yamaha service manuals and amongst them was one for an FZR500. I thought for a minute that it might be some unknown prototype, perhaps a YZR500 in an FZR frame or something equally exotic. :right The reality unfortunately is rather more boring - reading through the manua...
