Remember to use Exup rods... Exup pistons have a different diameter piston pin compared to Genesis.

Maybe I'm thinking of carb spacing
The later Thunderace carbs (38BDSRs) do have a different spacing which makes me wonder, how different is the Thunderace motor compared to the Genesis and Exup?

Here's another good one: http://www.muzzys.com/articles/lobe_centers.html When you decide to do it, you need slotted sprockets, a degree wheel, a good dial indicator and lots and lots of patience. When you've finished, pull the head off again and double check your valve to piston clearances. As I fo...

I'm fairly sure the Genesis and Exup blocks are interchangeable, I hope so 'cos I'm planning on putting an Exup block in my motor. The castings are different internally to allow for the thicker liners and bigger bore of the later motor, but bolt centres are the same. The only issue I found is that t...

Duke, any sign of valves touching in the other cylinders? No sign of impact but there is some erosion (lots of tiny pits) in all of the other exhaust valve pockets which suggests the valves have been getting awful close. I think this one valve must have had just 0.1mm less clearance, just enough to...

Well I did outqualify him... :) But then it was his first time back after the Pukekohe dramas. We were n...

Kiwi thinks I should give up on it and build a 1040, and I did get as far as dragging my old EXUP motor out and looking at it ... but I can't do it. That 911 is addictive :) I've got a set of 1040 pistons and EXUP rods and barrels which I was planning to use as the next stage of development, so I'll...

Duke's Taupo raceday

Race day for me lasted precisely six laps. We finally (finally, finally) had the jetting somewhere near right and apart from a slight part throttle cough it was flying. I was just starting to enjoy myself when it staggered on to three cylinders on the main straight... Long story short, number three ...

Ouch....

Bad luck Mike, must have been a hard landing. Bad timing too, right at the start of the summer season.

How's the bike?

And the East too ? That's the idea at this stage. There is talk of a container load of bikes but that will be Classics and Post Classics, so there will be lots of Manx Nortons and TZ350 Yamahas. Not sure how many Pre '89 bikes at this stage. Kiwi and I have both put our names down, we'll have to en...

Don't you just hate those wet-and-dry days?

Great photos of the FZR, it almost looks like a summer day there - a shame it had to end early and in such an unfortunate way.

Do you have any more photos / info on that Genesis 1000 factory bike?

I don't know for sure about the Diversion but FZRs with an oil cooler run a second stage on the oil pump to feed oil through the cooler. If you just block it off you'll effectively stall the oil pump (or at least have it running on the bypass all the time) which will put a big load on all the drives...

Sunshine and green grass in Canada!! About time too...

Sounds like a good day out. Things always go wrong at the first meeting of the season so a simple leaky float valve is not so bad :)

So the real question to you and Duke is, if the 748 is heavier and down on power, what is it about it that gives you the same lap times?? That's a very good question, and if I had thousands of dollars worth of telemetry gear I could answer it. :) The bikes actually feel quite different on the track...

Sounds like it was a good weekend Mike. I've ridden both my FZR and my 748 at trackdays and racedays. The 748 feels nervous and jittery by comparison, and is 15hp down on the FZR and 15kg heavier. The funny thing is, my lap times are the same on both bikes... First time I rode the 748 it just felt w...

Save your money and stick with the originals would be my suggestion. The OW forks were made for racing and were pretty highly regarded - the R6 forks are mass produced roadbike items. Unless you can get some kitted items off a racebike I can't think they'd be any better than the OW originals. I had ...

What Kiwi doesn't make clear is that after he bailed out the bike hit the fence on the outside of the track, then veered back on to the track and ran most of the length of the start finish straight, slowly drifting across the track and scaring the bejesus out of following riders racing for the flag....

Straightening wheels - good idea??

I have a front FZR wheel that has a buckled rim, not bad (maybe 5 - 6mm) but not really usable as it is. A local firm can roll it straight for about NZ$100 (US$70). Has anyone any experience of doing this? I gather its a routine repair for car rims but on a bike you rely on that front wheel a bit mo...
