Torque wrench suggestions??

Ran into a little problem the other night. Was swapping my old forks with the ones I got off eBay. Got the new ones put on and finger tightened the bolts on the trip-tree to hold them in place. Well...check the torque for the bolts and they're only 14 & 17ft lbs. Problem is my torque wrench doesn't go below 20 lbs. Being that they're the forks I want to make sure I get them on there properly. And of course I don't want to overtighten them and cause any damage to the upper tubes. I love the Craftsman wrench I have...but I don't have the cash to shell out another $70+ for a wrench. I've seen some on Harbor Freight Tool's website that run for under $20. My question is how accurate they are. Any tips? Nate - 87 FZR1000 Have you seen my fairing? Who cares...I got new ones!!!

i should say that they are fairly accurate. even the most inexpensive ones. the key in this is that the taiwanese (do not buy chinese) manufacturers, that make a whole lot of all cheap torq wrenches to all labels make them both "with sertificate" and "without sertificate". the price increase is around 4%@plant. trye to find one inexpencive torq wrench with the sertificate, and you can be quite assured that its accurate enaugh. we have Facom and Snap-on here and we also import some 500pcs of the inexpencive ones per year, and i have tested the sertified ones with the facom torq checking equipment and they are within limits. brands worth checking: -britool -kamasa dont have a clue whether you have them but they should be in the 30-50$ range.

I just bought two torque wrenches from Sears last year...plastic ring that locks the wrench snapped in half at the ultrasonic weld line. Out of warranty says Sears. Too bad, soooo sad..... Fupp em sez Aye!!!!!!!! Jim<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Cheers.gif ALT=":cheers">

Nate, I got one from harbor freight and it works great! Its a taiwanese made wrench, but it works for me! Thanks Barn...was hoping somebody had maybe used one from there. May swing by after work and pick one up. Not gonna need that small of a wrench that often so didn't want to spend much on it. NATE - THAT WOULD NEVER STOP A RACER ON RACE DAY!!!!!!!!!!! 14 to 16 ft. lbs. is a hand full, not an armfull of tourque. Use a standard length 3/8" ratchet. Give it a fair tug. That's good enough. Look at the side cut in the triple clamp - did it close up like it was supposed too? The tech writers will make too much of this if you let them. There are real accurate cheap tourque wrenches BTW, the kind with the pointer bar and the scale at the handle end will actually work as a tourque meter giving an indication of constant pull tourque. I was gonna say the same thing...I would say take elvis's advice It's not rocket science. But it is nice to have a both torque wrenches foot pounds and inch pounds. I know it's not a whole heck of a lotta torque. Just being that it's the forks I didn't want to overtighten and damage them. Guess it still freaks me out in a way that there are only like 8 bolts that keep the forks in place. Kinda makes me wanting to be absolutely sure about 'em.
