Well to each their own. And I completely agree with Haunter. Viruses and spyware are for n00bs as are most of the applications that block them. Likewise, I run no firewall on any of the 5 computers in my home and no antivirus on my personal workstation and notebook.
I looked at KomPozer (yet another program that starts with "K" ?) and put screenshots of it and Dreamweaver together at :
http://www.fastriders.net/html/computer/d_vs_k.html
It's kinda like comparing a SR500 to a R1. And I say "yet another program that starts with "K" ?" as I find it quite annoying to have nearly every KDE application start with a "K". It's like George Eastman gone berserk or something !
Here's a link on how to get rid of duplicates in Linux :

In Winderz I just use Doublekiller.

As I stated in the thread If you have Windows XP, why do you use linux?" on Ubuntu's forum ", "Sometimes you have to stop working ON the computer and start working WITH it!" Hmmmm, kinda like bikes, right ? Anyway, Linux has a few million beta testers and very few real developers. If you want a commercial strength OS you run XP or Vista. If you want to beta test, you run Linux. I've done my time as a beta tester. Again, I'm no MS fanboi, In fact I use Linux servers for my sites and for good reason. That's what Linux does best. However I simply refuse to waste a lot of time trying to make a square peg fit in a round hole.

I run the inlcuded windows firewall with OneCare now. OneCare is now one of the highest detection rate personal use AV cleints with a low resource impact, and it works WITH defender and windows firewall.....so I figured it was a good bet. plus they started the 3 clients per software purchase before anyone else and I used to have 3 XP boxes, now I just have one vista and one xp...nynoah wrote:haunter, you are playing with fire. If I was you, I would do a dual boot system and surf to your hearts delight on the linux system.
but like I said, most viruses count on bad decisions on the users part.

Often it's not clear as to which one is worse, the virus or the anti-virus ! Unfortunately AV programs like McAfee and Nortons security suites are riddled with bugs and are notorious for their updates.
Anyway, I've turned off all software firewalls on all systems as I have a firewall in my router that handles everything in hardware. In case most don't know, you're DSL and cable modems usually include a firewall as well. I use Remote Desktop to access my system at home when roaming with my notebook so I had to disable that firewall as well. Now I rely solely on my router and to that end I went with a D-Link DIR-655 which is a pretty good N-series router. Lots of options.
Re:Linux, I just took another look at the list of scanners supported by SANE and it's still limited to either high-end scanners such as the 4990 or low-end scanners such as the HP AIO that my wife uses. Also I find that my Creative X-Fi still isn't supported. Back to Winderz !

norton/symantec is bad, and a resource hog
mcafee is WORSE, it has a horrible catch rate
mcafee scored worse on catch last time than the FREE AVG. The pay for AVG is better still.
AVG, Kapersky, and OneCare are the only ones I will consider. None are resource hogs compared to the others(last time I checked) and had better catch rates.
and yeah, no virus's on LINUX, but patch daily or have big security holes too!

Symantec/Norton is a resource hog but it has its benefits--it's and easy install and if you have young kids you can set up parental controls on it. With three kids with laptops going to college, I like it because I can install it, configure it for automatic updates and scans, set up the personal firewall, and pretty much and forget about it until time to renew the license. They've added spyware protection now which saves me from buying another product.
Except for when my son uninstalled his Symantec we've not had a virus, and my kids downlad a lot of crap.
All it need now is remote monitoring in the partental controls so I can spy on my kids' on-line activity.

As long as Symantec and McAfee are in business, I'll have a job.KontoBoy wrote:All it need now is remote monitoring in the partental controls so I can spy on my kids' on-line activity.

As far as the kids, Vista has all that and more built right in. Also, the very first thing any parent should do prior to giving a computer to a child is install a good hosts file.

That combined with Firefox, Avast AV and Windows Defender and a few strong suggestions about file sharing and porn had better be adequate. Simple rule in our home. I'm the dictator until someone else wants to pay the bills.
