A Day at the Races

Post by kiwi60 »

The third Sunday of Feburary is the date each year of the Pearoa Battle of the Streets.

Paeroa is a little country town with 3 pubs, 2 petrol stations and a few shops to service the surrounding country side, but on this day it gets transformed into a bike racing circuit.

Duke22 and I cruised down in the mighty Focus on what turned out to be a scorching hot late summer day.

As usual, the bike parks were full to over flowing with all manor of loyal steeds.

The racing was as hot as the weather, with no quarter asked for, and none given.
One of the great parts of going to this meeting is just how close you are to the racing, sometimes there is only wire netting seperating you and the bikes that are hitting 270kph on the front straight.

After watching these guys braving melted tar, both Duke22 and I decided that we no longer had the stones for this circuit (we both raced here in the 90's).

Great to watch, but I think I'll stick to the dedicated race circuits - must be getting older

Man I wouldn't have the balls to do street racing like that. My mate who came out and rode the 750 last week did some racing in the UK way back, Isle of Man, Ulster GP and a few others. He reckons it was scary then and he was still young, dumb and full of cum. :)

I keep hearing the racing scene in NZ is really strong. Might have to come over and check it out someday.

P.S. Do you really get hot days in NZ :)

Nah, the aussies have been up to 47C in the last month or two, and most of our days are in the late 20's with only the occasional spike into the 30's.

However, if you head to NZ's South Island, they're experiencing highs of 22C...!!!

Ok - so I was a bit out...but I'm sure someone, somewhere, sometime told me 47, truly it's not because I'm well into the beers this evening :cheers ;)

Ha !!!!
The 6 hour weekend it was 46degs!! But anyway, I wouldnt mind having a go at that street racing. Looks like fun, you just have to ride with your head as far as I can see. Always keep somthing up your sleave & dont go nuts & it should be OK..

And Steve - spectators!

Maybe we've been barking up the wrong tree with PCRA - we don't need a new circuit in NSW, lets just fence off Walgett or somewhere for a weekend!

Not to mention all the spectator and all hanging right on the bloody chicken wire, UNREAL. It's a shame but that'd never wash in Canada.

I would have loved to have seen an Isle of Man race before it'd become all safe and what not. Not that there's anything wrong with safe but.....
