Online magazine article - How fast is your (old?) bike...

Post by hotcam »

So what if your motorbike is over 10 years old, it will still demolish a £150,000 supercar away from a set of traffic lights...

We gate crashed Autocar magazine's annual 0-100-0 contest and brought along a selection of second-hand motorbikes to see just how cheaply you can wipe the floor with the fastest, most expensive cars in the world. ...

...As the car guys stroll around polishing their Porsche GT3, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Ford GT40 and other such exotica, I'm unloading a £1,500 Yamaha Thunderace, 1984 Katana 1100 and Honda Goldwing from the back of the van. My initial credibility when I showed up on the GSX-R1000 K7 is gradually being eroded as my ever-increasingly odd selection of weaponry is unveiled....

Just not sure if the GoldPig would've been as fast as the cars, other two bikes without ? crushed them, until top speed was an issue.
Very cool though Cam!

Interesting article, but the next one on Stoner going to Repsol Honda was also interesting as it opens the question - will Rossi leave Yamaha and go to Ducati as has been whispered for some time?????
“I venture not to cross that finish line in a neat, tidy well ordered bundle, but to slide across it sideways in a shower of spark’s, leaking oil, hissing steam shouting ..Geronimo !!!!! “

Fun article, Road and Track did a similar thing back in 1994 with production cars (no Atom  ) and then threw in a ZX9 for fun. Being all road legal and stock vehicles it was a great read. Oh, the big Z, stopped before 2/3 of the pack hit 100. :banana

Well I do not know about the Ace (I have a '94 FZR1000). The article said "The 'Ace' was only a second slower 0-100mph than the K7 GSX-R, managing it in 6.7 seconds compared to the Suzuki's 5.4 sec."

All the FZR1000 articles that I have, as reprints of the originals from Cycle World, etc ..., list the 0-100 MPH time in the range from 5.6 seconds to 6.0 seconds ... depending on the model year (91-95).

6.7 seconds ?? Either the Ace was slower than the FZR1000 or the rider in the article was slow.

Looking through my article reprints, the Ace ran in a 5.6 to 6.2 second range. My guess would be that being 13 years old with x amount of miles on it, it was not the in the freshest of tune.

I have the articles by both Cycle World and Car & Driver pitting the Ace against a Viper GTS it also is a great read.

Just shows how mind-bending modern sports bikes are: completely civilised, reliable, affordable, and 0-100mph in under 6 seconds. Just think about that for a second....0-100mph in 6 seconds.......

0-60mph in 6 seconds is a pretty fast time for a car.....

the newest Sport Rider has a great comparo of the new M3 vs the S1000R at streets of willow

the S1000R spanks it mercilously at less than a 3rd the cost, out turning braking and accellerating it, ticking off a 1:24.xx vs the M3's 130.x

I love that! alot of the bikes here r amazing. can u imagine some of the really worked FZRs going up against some cool cars.

It is also cool because bikes cost less. like my duc was used and cheap and i get more attention then alot of sports car that cost 10 times more money or more Actually the new vet base price on the signs is more then 20times what Noodles cost and unless it has the badest rims and body kit Noodles gets more compliments. :) Jello 2 :)
