Bringing my GS850 back to life
Bringing my GS850 back to life
Well like the title says, I'm bringing one of my favorite bikes back to life to get back on the road this summer
That's as she sits now. I tore her apart because she was breaking up, and that was 2 years ago. Now I'm getting it roadworthy. I diagnosed it as my left coil for cylinder 2/3 is shot. Tested resistance and it was way out of range.
Also had the pleasure of spending 4 hours restoring my beautiful polished gear housing that I neglected for 2 years
Tomorrow ill be cleaning and polishing the front up, and reclean the carbs once again for good faith. New coil is on the way and bang were off.
Now I don't know if any of you guys have experience with a lot of these zuks BUT since the blocks all seem to be so similar I've been pondering for years now putting GS1100 rods, pistons and jugs on the bottem end with an 850 head. Just wanted to know if the oil galleries were similar if not the same... I just figured suzuki being suzuki, everything is interchangeable lol

Re: Bringing my GS850 back to life
Just yank the motor and put a GSX-R motor in there........ Although the GS1100 motors are good........... the 1150E motors are far superior.
There are some who call me........Tim?

Well we have a Kat 1100 but right off the head, this is drive propelled and the Kat and gsxrs are chain.
I didn't look the 1150E up but are they shaft driven Tim ?

Re: Bringing my GS850 back to life
The E models were quite beautiful Anthony, some of my favourite Suzuki models, although the very beautiful 550's were gutless. I thought they were also in 400's and the 850's but they only came in E's.
Here's come pics
Can you tell where the Katana eventually received their styling from? I think the first model that ever came out was based on the 1150ES model, albeit, "based" lightly

Yes Yes I know, I said, I'm building a project YZF1070
Basement is done now, 850 finished and gone...
Gotta get the new siding up on the house.
Fixing the FZ1 up, cleaning up garage and then I might even begin

I had this bike. Put some 60K miles on it. Was a good bike to learn on. I liked it.

Ah yea the orginal kat1150. I do remember those. I saw one a few years for sale, beautiful done up, ohlins all around. And they were fetching a hefty coin.
Mines the 850 L model. But I remember reading of all these different one and for sale. The Katana's were deff based off those E models. I just want to make this L model pristine as I can again. Eventually with have a more peppy motor.
Order new float bowl gaskets, coil and some rubber grommets for the gas tank. It's coming along. All I've been working on is zuks. The 850, my moms GS500f so she can ride(which she took to work today) a customers 600 with 750 swap he wanted me to put in. I've got the 1100 to tear in today while waiting for parts for the other bikes.
GREAT NEWS THO!!!
I've been in contact with the bloke I sold Reptar too. Guess what?!!? Daddy's buying his baby back in the next few months!!!!
He offered to sell it back to me and doesn't mind holding onto her while I get my money right
So happy to get my baby again

Re: Bringing my GS850 back to life
It took a while to find the 1100 shaft drive model, but it's the GSX1100G circa 1993:

If you want the 1100 motor, this might be the way to go

She looks great Sort of chubby, but looks like a nice comfortable ride. Did you make the screen out of a ex-police riot shield?
