Has anyone ever had luck just changing piston rings?

Got something you want to say but don't know where else to say it? This is the spot to post it!

Has anyone ever had luck just changing piston rings?

Post by tbrown3 »

Just wondering if any FZR owner has ever been able to cure oil consumption by simply installing new rings and honing the cylinders. I am trying not to drop $500 on a Wiseco kit. I once tried re-ringing an old GPZ750, and the oil consumption stayed the same. Has anyone had luck with just new rings?

You would need to measure the bore in three places and at 90 deg to each other to determine the bore dia. Then measure the pistons...Is the clearance within spec??
If not then it's piston time if you like it or not
I have rerung engines to cure oil consumption and as long as the piston clearance and ring end gap is correct you will be fine. You will certainly want to check valve guide clearance and install new guide seals while you are in there.
I believe the gasket set is $200 anyway, so I would think it may be false economy to not just rebuild the engine while you are in there. But that's just me
Jim<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Cheers.gif ALT=":cheers">

Thanks for the insight, Jim. Point understood. I guess I was really wondering how often piston to cylinder clearance is actually within spec, and cylinders are round. Is anyone ever that lucky?

actually the cyl (I've seen) wears out of round due to rocking on the piston under load....
Jim<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Cheers.gif ALT=":cheers">

My 750R had the rings and guide seals done about 5000 miles ago, I do not know what it was like just after it was done, but it has always used a lot of oil in the past 9 months I have owned the bike. It does not smoke all the time, only when used hard, also the exhaust gets wet with oil. I have checked the breather and that is clean, so is the air filter.

<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
