Poser...Exhaust polishing question

Post by Nbot »

So I got this SS2R off ebay for $75 incl/shipping, which I thought was a sweet deal...but it turns out that the can has been "oxidized" or something...it came from California, so....you can see in the pictures the "pitting/oxidizing"...my question is, can I use a buffer or metal polisher or anything to make this look poser blingin' again????

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/ ...

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/ ...
Nbot
'94 Fizzer Litre
This is your sig on drugs....

Really though you can use a hand samder and WD-40 with 600 or 800 wet and dry paper. The rWD-40 acts to flush the grit and then you can use 0000 steel wool with WD-40 to get a mirror polish
Little circles
Wipe on
Wipe off
Sand da floor
Snatch the pebble....

Jim<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Awww, come on, is it Al or Ni? I'll just try it on a small spot on the backside.....

So can I just use one of those orbital palm-held sanders?? And no metal "cleaner" or polish is needed? Just WD and steel wool?? doesn't make sense, but I'll give it a try with the water displacer......

I believe it is the mid pipe and the exhaust tip that are nickle plated and the can is aluminum. When cleaning the end cap and mid pipe on mine I used NEVR-DULL. Cleaned and polished the aluminum SS2R that was on my wifes old Ninja 600R that appeared to have the same pitting and it worked with no problems. Also worked well on the chrome on the wifes muscle car....

Pic of her old bike after cleaning the exhaust...

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/ ...
Jim

95 FZR1000

the pipe (midpipe) is nickel the can wrap is aluminum
And I would use either a little triangulad finishing sander or an orbital one...that'll work just fine
Although if you use one with the stickon paper, you may not be able to find paper fine enough
and you MUST use wet and dry paper with WD-40 to get good results
Jim<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Stick on sandpaper won't workwell with wd-40. You'll need a special hook n loop backing pad with the hook n loop sandpaper. We use it at the shop. Comes in fine grit from 800 to 2000! Better off using good ole' elbow grease<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... iker_3.gif ALT=":riding">

Freelance Bodyman

I be ridin the Cali Bay Area '88 & '89 FZR1K BOTH ARE ONLY HALF NAKED NOW!!!

Even with the never dull you'll find that the older stuff usually works better. But when they have to reformulate it to make it more envromental that it doesn't work quite as well. Had an old can of it and it work much better. Used a newer can and had to use a little more elbow grease. Won't give you mirror polish but it will make it all nice and shiny agian....
Jim

95 FZR1000
