Shifting with no clutch?

Guys i find myself doing this automatically , whenever i wheelie and the front comes up too fast my left foot clicks to second .... with no clutch i know with a car , its a no no , but what with a bike? what can be damaged? is it advisable?

Shifting with no clutch is no problem as long as your not doing it while on the throttle. If you are unloading the tranny and then kicking the shifter and then getting back on the gas thats OK. Just don't do it to down shift.... Jim 95 FZR1000

What you are talking about when you say "Slipper clutch" is a back torque limiting clutch which is used to not cause wheel hop whilst downshifting... A Slipper clutch is actually a cam actuated clutch used for drag racing (so that you can control the amount of slip) and a slider is something similar to a slipper...but is done with wrichts adn arms to lock up the clutch harder as RPM rise Jim<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Stevo, If done properly clutchless upshifts are easier on your bike than using the clutch for upshifting. Preload the shifter by putting pressure on it (foot up under the shifter). When you're ready to upshift, quickly ease up on the throttle a little (just enough to momentarily unload the transmission), and then quickly open the throttle again. If done properly the bike will shift into the next gear so smooth it will feel like automatic transmission. The procedure works better in the mid to high RPMs and when your engine is warm. The procedure does not work as well at low RPMs or with a cold engine. Experiment with your bike to see which RPM range works best/worse. You can also use the preload technique when using the clutch. You will find that it will shift quicker/smoother with only a little squeeze of the clutch. Always use the clutch for the downshifts. Don

Don no bocy is making a back torque limiting clutch for the transmission as an aftermarket product. I'm not sure ho wyou would install one into our tranny anyway. It was never designed to have one.... Jim<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Cheers.gif ALT=":cheers">

yeah some racers spend the dough on slipper cluthches theese days...not really worth it in my opinion....and yes, they teach you at racing schools that upshifting w/o cluthch is FASTER shifting and easier on your bike. But don't race/downshift.... I shift w/o clutch on my cars--really comes in handy to know how when you're clutch fails and you have to get across town....pretty much all diesel/truckers don't use clutch...just matching rpm and tranny/speed...I downshift on my dirtbike if speeds are slow, just tap down on the lever and slides in real easy and clean though.... this comes to mind...a number of years ago I drove 350 miles - stop and go - tolls - highways etc from boston to new jersey when I had my 5 spd mustang NO CLUTCH...the cable snapped. It made for interesting stop and go's For the pay tolls I had to use my starter to get back rolling again. I always thought of that as one of my best driving feats ever. I did attempt to get a rental car...I ended parking just outside the place in a no-park zone. State police arrived and was gonna slap me a ticket - then I explained no clutch and going home. He then called a tow truck and threatened to fine me for driving a un-road worthy car.
