Anyone ever owned a BMW? New bike suggestions?

Post by Hiras »
Alright all!

I've recently moved house (hence my absence from the board) and my new place is a considerable distance from where I work.
With petrol now being nearly £1 a litre I am spending a fortune on fuel as my daily commute is over 100 miles.
I had the idea to get a commuter bike for the week and put the FZR in the garage for the weekend.
The more I think about this the better it gets.
Firstly it would take the pressure off me to always have the Fizzer operational and would allow me time to give her some real TLC and perhaps even do a full restoration job.
Secondly I now live in the countryside and reckon the roads could be "interesting" come the Winter, so if I had a cheap hack, I wouldn't mind if I threw it down the road.
Finally, I would hope that I could make a considerable saving in fuel costs.
I've been looking on flea bay at old BMW RT's, Honda CB400's, GS500's (eewwww!!!!) , CX's\NTV's and alike and have seen a one owner FSH bimmer for £300. Anyone got any thoughts on this?
I thought a shaft drive would be practical and as most of my journey is on the motorway, I wouldn't mind riding some old tank.
Can you think of any other bikes that would fit the bill well that are reliable and as cheap as chips?

Best regds to all the hood,

Jason

Congrats on the new Home. The GS500 isn't a bad bike and has been around forever, so parts are easy to find.

£300 for the BMW is a hell of a deal to pass.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
There are some who call me........Tim?
Top Speed = Mach 0.197 or so...
1994 FZR 1000 <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...

It's a compromise, if economy is king how about a CB250?

If you're looking for 50 mpg I've only read good things about the GSX600F, an older model as you said would stop you worrying about damaging it, and everyone says they're cheap to run and very trouble free.

The Beemer is a deal for sure but I've no idea what mpg you could expect, or how expensive parts would be. There was a Beemer owner stood next to me in a bike shop last week pulling his hair out 'cos they couldn't get tyres in standard sizes for his bike anymore and the Spanish MOT won't let you stray from original spec. Don't know if that's the case in Blighty.

Anyway, goof luck<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Hi one and all!

I have a K1100LT 8 years old and has done 93,300 miles, it still pulls like a train, it can and still does suprise people at the way it goes! For everyday use - shaft drive is the way to go! As with any used bike - buy with care! They can be an aquired taste.

THE SWITCH GEAR IS GREAT!!

<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... I have a 78 BMW R100/7 that I absolutely love. My dad bought it brand new,a nd I bought it off him 5 years ago. Great bike, very reliable and not too bad when i do need a part here or there. Very easy to maintain. I get about 48 mpg and used to have to use lead additive in the gas until i changed the valves and valve stems over...anyways i do recommend a BMW but only if you have a good shop that knows them in the area or if you can tackle maintenence yourself...just like any bike I guess.
My Bikes:

1978 BMW R100/7
1985?
Heheheh,

bought this VTR 250 off fleabay at the weekend for £535.
1 owner from new, 5000 miles on the clock, 2000 W plate.

<img src="http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/mo ...

<img src="http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/mo ...

I rode it to work this morning and fonud myself laughing into my helmet a lot.
It did two things it had never done before:
1 - It's top speed ( a mind bending 95 MPH....phew)
2 - had it's pegs down.

In fact it was nailed to the stop for most of the journey.
I was particularly amused to find that it really handles well although I was a little worried about the back spinning up with a whole 32bhp on tap

I reckon it should be fine for a Winter runaround and now i'm not entirely reliant on the FZR for transport I can finally give the old girl the TLC she needs. Suddenly she's my Winter project. I'm going to document her restoration and post pics here. First jobs on my list:
New Cam cover gasket
Replace roller bearings in the suspension linkage.

Next job - repair\restore fairings.
Respray?????

Jason
