My old TL1000s

Post by spook »

Decided to upgrade my old TL1000's rear suspension. I have eliminated the spring on the stick and rotary damper and built a new shock tower for the R model Ohlins and R braced swinger. I get it welded up on Monday, then blasted and powder coated saturn black. Once this is done I'll be finishing my old FZ750 racer... :)

That looks great - I've heard that it makes a world of difference to get
rid of the old rotary damper, though I've never ridden a TL very
far to know.

The TL1000s was voted motorcycle of the year back in 97. The rear damper was its demise, creating handling issues (head shake) and it made people screw up their faces and poke it with a stick.... Otherwise it is a SENSATIONAL bike, brutal, but honest if you know what I mean. lol.

The only thing that really is S left on this bike is the frame and a few other bits. I'll post some shots of it once I'm done. I'm going to get its weight down to bare minimum, and enjoy punting it around on the back roads over summer.

Always fancied a TL.

Even went as far as lookin for one a while ago until a Z1000 came up at a stoopid price it would of been rude to turn down. Never quite got the hang of the Z tho n wish I'd held out for the suzuki.

Ah well. Live n learn

WOW - not a bad days work there spook - looking forward to seeing it finished.

Are you keeping the clipon racer style or going for more of a street fighter vibe?

I came close to buying a TL in '05, but went with a new SVS with the uprated motor - and IMHO you can't beat a V-twin for road riding, and I did 500kms on mine yesterday and loved every minute of it.

Keep the racer feel I think Kiwi. For any of you that haven't ridden one of these you end up with a lot of weight on the wrists, though i have flattened off the rear of the seat and that helps.

I'm looking into some good quality R (full faired) carbon raceglass for it, and will put one headlight to the side so that has the endurance racer look... something like the fairing below. I'm with you on the V-Twin Kiwi

Okay... it is all welded up. Off to the power coaters/blasters later in the week. I know it's not a FZR...lol. will have some good shit happening by the end off the week in that regard!

Hey, you have to realize that you are the guys and girls I wish to share it with... So a bit of TL in the meantime?

Now there's a silly question if I ever heard one!!!

Kind of like finding a bottle of Matusalem in the fridge and considering teetotalism... or smelling frying bacon and considering vegetarianism....

You know you want to......
If you're going to take a shot at me let me know so I can duck...!

Should I?
Oh HELL YEAH.

If it makes you feel any better, even I, the penny-pincher, have lashed out
on forks, in my case I purchased a little bit more than just springs
to update my handling...

Image

...it arrived from the USA yesterday.

Well, for AU$65 post just to get springs, why not spend AU$70 post instead
and get the rest at 1/2 the price of buying locally...

Way to go Cam... watching you vid, 2 things come to mind #1 front under-sprung and dampered, and #2 it is a shame you didn't get to film your last sessions because you were punting at a far greater rate than your vid suggests.

I reckon that there would (real world) be little difference between oem+race tech... and Ohlins R&T. Though... You know....

Hey... get it put together and lets go!

Hey... get it put together and lets go!
Can hardly wait to try it out, hope to get it done on Sunday perhaps?
Watched the accompanying video last night (on DVD converted from VHS).
Not the greatest quality filming etc but the technical info and
watching them install the valves was GOLD.
Picture worth 1000 words etc etc.
