Overheating

Okay, I'm just trying to see if I'm crazy or not or if my bike has a problem. After even short trips through town, the temp. gauge will get to 100'C where the fan kicks on. If I get off the bike the fan will stay on until back down to 90'C or so. BUT the frame (yes the frame) is VERY hot to the touch on the right hand side midway. I'm not crazy, the frame is not supposed to be that hot right? So if so, then I should probably check/replace the thermostat and check the radiator cap for correct opening pressure first. I mean previously it would get to 100'C and fans would kick in in town, but never this quickly and I don't seem to remember the frame getting so hot. The Haynes says a good indicator of a failed thermostat is that the coolant temp. gauge does not "rise to the normal operating temp. (80'C) quickly and then stay there , only rising above the normal position occasionally when the engine gets abnormally hot." My bike almost always goes to 100'C in traffic on hot days, but it never "quickly" gets to normal temp. How long does it take your'alls bikes to get to "normal?" ...and yes plenty of coolant in system..... Wish I could say more, but my bike is great on the open road and absolutely blows in town. I have run the oil cooler system as well as the water-cooled oil jacket system with similar results..HOT.. I have thought of running engine ice, but that s%!$ is expensive and I can choose to not ride in town, so I choose to run pet friendly anti-freeze. This may change due to not the best performance. Good luck with finding a solution other than changing radiators.

If you see my other thread there "antifreeze" feel free to chip in....I bought a new radiator cap today, it's psi (pressure) was low and so since the temp=pressure=volume (or something like that) if your radiator cap doesn't pressure test to spec than might be creating a situation where lower pressure=lower boiling point of coolant. Just put it on and hopefully tomorrow I'll be posting about how much happier I am. '94 Fizzer 1000

Well maybe my bike isn't overheating as much as I am over-reacting...talked to another fellow in town who says everybody's bike that he knows-even new gixxers and R's-are getting super hot in town quick....I guess the heat's effects just came up quick on me since I've only ridden a handful of times in last month and half b/c of tinkering with carbs and powdercoating and jobs/other projects....nonetheless I'm planning on flushing the radiator and refilling with 50/50 and maybe a little bit of the water wetter.

I got the same prob Nbot...going to replace the thermo soon to see if that helps. Highway running...no prob whatsoever. Get in town and temp skyrockets quicker than hell. I'm guessing maybe cause the bike had sat for a long time before I bought it the thermo froze up. Nate 87 FZR 1000 We got clearence, Clarence. Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?

very funny jon....I've been to UK (London and Edinburgh) and I'm pretty certain that you've got to stop for traffic occasionally as well!!!!! but seriously o.burn--I'm going to change the thermostat to eliminate it as a problem, probably not a bad ideer being a decade old. ($30 ain't horrible, but having to pull the carbs to replace it??? what the #$%^--oh well) Yeah in like 15 seconds on the highway the temp will come down, but in 1-2 stoplights in town it'll be back up to where the fan comes on...I dunno, I suppose that it's working right, just a little scary>>>>>>>>>> Oh and FYI, the bit earlier about indicator of a failing thermostat not letting the coolant rise "quickly" to operating temp. does not necessarily apply to us at high altitude (or so I'm told by shop mech's--compression, etc....) Nbot, I live in southern Arizona (Tuscon) and my bike runs like yours (and probably every FZR1000). Summer is hot and sitting at an intersection waiting for the green light is hot. Temp gauge goes to 100 degC while sitting and then goes back down while moving. Temp range stays cool (60 - 80 degC) during the winter/spring/fall months or while open riding (no prolonged stops). I added Water Wetter to my 50/50 antifreeze mix and it seemed to help (takes longer to get to 100 degC and drops down quicker) ... but don't expect it to stay at 80 degC while sitting at a prolonged traffic light in hot weather. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o"> Don

Nbot, The fan does come on and stays on until the temp drops. The temp does not drop until I'm moving again in clean air (may take a couple of city blocks distance). As long as I'm sitting still at the intersection the fan runs and the temp stays at 100 degC. Does not seem to harm the engine any. Since it's spec'd to hold it's temp at 100 degC I would not think it would cause any problems. You have a ways to go before you're in the red danger zone of the temp gauge. Yes, there's heat coming up through the frame openings but I always wear jeans, or my Joe Rocket riding pants, so it's not a big discomfort. The heat dissipates once I'm moving again. Don

okay nbot...buy an inframeter...about $30 at NAPA etc Then let us know how hot your frame is getting. I'm curious now. And hey...with your new found inframeter toy..you can aim it at your hubs to ensure no overheating bearings and such...oh and each tube of the exhaust manifold to detect which cylinder if any is running rich/lean oh and the...okay now I have convinced myself to go out and buy one too! -John

OK...I'll have to go do some investigation, Glycol was introduced into aviation cooling systems because of the HP race in WWII fighters and the increase in manifold temps from upping boost. I believe glycol transfers heat better than water (when mixed 50/50) Jim

You know, this may sound dumb, but I hadn't even noticed the "red" zone on my temp gauge, in which case everything seems to work fine....fan comes on @ 100'C and doesn't let the temp rise higher--fan cuts off when free moving again. I still think a manual fan switch is in my future just to provide ease of mind in traffic, any tips would be appreciated on how to do so (fan switch for idiots etc). But the frame really did get awfully hot last week--couldn't touch it with bare fingers! '94 Fizzer 1000

Yeah, those frames do get awful hot in the summer time. If you feel the need caress your frame while your sitting at a red light and you find it uncomfortably hot, you might want to consider de-sensitizing your fingers by pulling hot pans out of the oven without mitts. Do that a few times and the frame will seem relatively cool. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)">
