Yeah, I got the EXUP adjusted. Still have the noise. Was wondering if I might bring it by this weekend and have you take a look/listen at it.
I took the clutch down to check the plates and discs, which were fine. There was an unusual scuffing on 2 of the fingers of the basket though. I'll e-mail you a couple of pics on that.
I'm really thinking that it is valve adj related now. Or at least I hope.
Tim
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
Has anyone seen my keys?
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
'94 FZR 1000

Noise

Post by FZRDude »

Okay, Jim, john, and Bob all know of this in some way. I might as well share it with the rest of you.
I adjusted the EXUP the other night to try to get rid of this annoying ticking noise, at idle and just off idle. Well, I got rid if it. Only to be replaced with and even uglier noise. Under medium to hard acceleration, in say second or third, starting around 3.5k when it gets to about 4k this rattle/knocking sound starts. It doesn't sound horrible, but doesn't sound good either. When I ride sane or normal I don't hear the noise at all.
Now it just started, the same time the other one stopped. The new noise I would have heard before this either with or without adj the EXUP.
I'm thinking it may be valve-train related.

94 FZR 1000
25k miles
SS2R slip-on
(stock as far as I know, had factory exhaust)
New air filter
Clutch plates and discs look fine, will check the basket this weekend.
Tim
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
Has anyone seen my keys?
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
'94 FZR 1000

Thats a head scratcher there Tim. If for any reason the engine was rotated in reverse during the work you did ( and I don't know why it would have been), It might have over-tightened the cam chain tensioner. Other than that, I don't have a clue right off. Will confer with Jim later today.
I approved this message

I tend to think that even if the motor got rotated in reverse (puts the slack in front of the crank...tight in back of crank...) that would have put rearward pressure on the tensioner. they are a ratchet affair and not difficult at all to remove adn reset.
Jim

It sounds to me like the dudes bike is Knocking under acceleration. Try some chevron techron to get the carbon out.

You know Circus, I was just thinking that on the way home from Dragracer1951's house. I am running Chevron, but just regular. Next tank I'm going to try Prem (prices).

Jim took my bike for a spin but couldn't seem to get the noise to rear its ugly head. Yet I did just after leaving his place.

I still need to get in there and check the valve clearances.
Tim
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
Insert Joke Here
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
'94 FZR 1000

Given the fact that we are entering Fall...and Tim your up in the northern latitudes just as I am - don't the petrol distributors CHANGE their gas content when entering the colder season? Perhaps this is attributing to the noise by way of detonation/pinging.

Oh and why is this OFF TOPIC? Seems like it's about bikes...and tuning....and issues.

-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... >jjs777 at: 9/19/04 4:03 am

Sounds to me like there is a little administrative power play going on based on semantics. Let's keep it civil and settle things with an arm wrestle. I'll assume the role of the bookie. I'll need some stats to set the odds and we'll need to post promotional pictures of both you guys flexing and performing some WWF antics. In the spirit of the Olympics, we'll need to keep this event clean which means testing will be required for performance enhancing drugs such as Ginseng,Viagra and Geritol.

I was out all this weekend and ran 92 octane the whole time. No noise that I could discern after the 2nd tank. I have not yet tried the 89 octane yet, will give it a try on the next tank-full.
Why would this noise seemingly appear like that? What problems might this indicate?
Tim
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
Insert Joke Here
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
'94 FZR 1000
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... pinking...

Post by Exupilot »

Pre-ignition Tim, you've just stepped up the octane rating and stopped it. Check your spark plug gaps, these are critical, we had a car on a CO meter years back that was off the richter scale, turned out to be a plug gap closed up. The gap controls the burn rate and timing more than you realise. Why do you think the manufacturers go to such lengths to specify them.

The timing on the Exup is pretty much static, ie you cant adjust it unless you got a tooth out on your timing chain so I doubt the problem lies there, and you would REALLY know if your timing chains out of synch.

But after all said and ddone, could be just plain old crap petrol.

Rob

3 other possible causes are:

carbon build up
worn cam lobes
lean running (possibly from gummed up jets)
