Just a thought......?

Do the emulsion tubes ( needle jets ?) wear out ovalised because the carbs are downdraught ?
I can only guess that gravity is pulling the needle down onto the sides of the tube all the time and that the up down motion of the throttle causes it to wear the sides of the tube....?

?

.p.

Nope...they wear because of vacuume pulses at the carb throat at low rpms. if you ride in town the most, your carbs will wear faster than if you ride the opwn road
Aftermarket needles are harder than stock also
Jim

It seems to me that the answer to the riddle would be the sum of Phil and Jim's thoughts.

I could see how you'ld think that way...But I have a bunch of 80's Suzukis that I've had to do emulsion tubes on....and they fur sure arn't downdraft carbs

I'm not sayin that downdraft has nothing to do with it....just not as much as ya might think
Jim

OH!

Now that you mention it, it makes sense. the air velocity does impart a load and would force the needle toward the intake manifold.

Yeah suppose both must be true ...seeing as the needles being forced towards the intake and pulled down by gravity ( on downdraft carbs) ...

So do downdraft carbs wear their tubes quicker than upright ?

.p.
