I have a blown head gasket on my 95 1040... I'm pretty sure this is due to heating in traffic here in Seattle. Temp gage would go to a bit over a hunnert deg c and puke coolant from the overflow tank<br>Ordered another Cometic head gasket (Thanks to Laura at Schnitz racing) and it came in Thursday<br>It's no big deal to pull the head and fix this but....<br>I'm interested in a bit more cooling. I've thought of a switch for the fan but I'm an old fart and have no attention span and would thus forget to turn it off<br>thought of a lower temp sensor to automaticaly turn the fan on at a lower temp. Anyone have a part # ?? bout 180 or 190 deg f ought to do the trick<br>thought of adding another fan to draw more air through the radiator.....<br>Anyone have any ideas?<br>I have a few, just not sure they any good or not!<br>Jim <p></p><i></i>

Jim,<br><br>I hate to badmouth but I have had that particular experience with cometic gaskets a few times. I've also on my second oem gasket that I have had to modify with a dremel and neither has ever given me problems. <br><br>I could sit in traffic on a hot day and let the fan cook my knees and it won't overheat, or puke coolant. That was never the case with cometic. They seemed fine on cool days, but one episode of taxing heat would make them fail. <br><br>I admit the thought of grinding a gasket is not pleasant, but it works very well. I've also seperated the 3 layers to give them a thorough cleaning. You have to be careful not to leave any chips, oil, or cleaner on it and you can easily install the 3 layers seperately, since you have the two locating dowels to hold them in place. <br><br>I've changed the head gasket a few times in my 14 years of ownership and I've used a trick to keep the barrels from climbing up and breaking seal with the base gasket. Take one of those ratcheting tie down straps and wrap it around the jug. Use a couple of blocks of wood, fore and aft, to tighten it up even further. have a second strap that loops through the first at the ends of the barrel and wraps around the bottom to keep tension on the jug.<br><br><br>I'm wondering if you could do me the favor of measuring the pitch of the carbs on your 95 exup. Since these carbs were common to both the yzf and the fzr, this would be a useful bit of information for me. I have requested this in a previous thread, but seeing that your are going to be digging soon, I figured it would be convenient to ask you specifically. <p></p><i></i>

Well...I've heard the same thing about these gaskets but I've used em for years in the race bike...But then I take it apart far more often than I do the FZR!!!<br>I think you may be correct about this gasket in this application<br>But....it's what I got at the moment.....<br>I also think that if I add some cooling capacity to the bike that it'll be ok<br>You talkin about the centerline spacing of the carbs????<br>I can let you know what that is in a day or so<br>I think it's a bit different from the 750 though<br>On the other hand...You could fit them to the rack for a 750, I would think<br>Jim <p></p><i></i>

No, sorry about the confusion, but what I'm actually looking for is the measured angle from perfectly vertical. I checked mine with a machinist protractor and they are 9 deg. from vertical. <p></p><i></i>

Jim,<br>I had my bike push coolant out the vent hole of the coolant tank when the engine ran hot (100 degC). Turned out to be a defective radiator cap.<br>Don <p></p><i></i>

Jim, I had a thought on putting a coolant re-circulation tube in when I was putting mine back together, Just some simple tube m'ebe 3/8" I.D or some such, I don't see that this engine has any provision for coolant re-circ in stock form. It looked to me like there would be room from the back of the thermostat housing down under the carb rack and into the W/P inlet. I didn't take the time to do it on mine 'cause I wanted to get riding, but I think I'll look into it here coming up. The stock configuration just has a weep hole up high in the back of the thermostat to get some hot coolant by untill it opens up, but I wonder if the block and head temp wouldn't stay more stable with a re-circ system. I have seen radiator mods as well, guys using YZF 1000, YZF 750 w twin fans and metal blades, and even a few ones from the BIG ZX7 RR from 94 I think.<br><br>CHUCK D. <p></p><i></i>

yeah keep in mind that if it is a bad radiator cap it is a compound problem - if bad cap and it blows too quick then the pressure drops thus resulting in coolant temp going considerably higher due to less atmospheric pressure<br><br>less pressure = hotter coolant <p>-John<br>95 FZR1000<br>90 FZR1000</p><i></i>
