What tips & tricks do you have for "Bedding" in new brake pads?
Tim
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
Insert Joke Here
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
'94 FZR 1000

I usually go down a fairly desolate road at around 20 mph and break heavily to a stop a few times. I haven't seen any studies on this, so I kinda based this on machining practices. Surface speed generates heats and therefore I reasoned that the slow speed would prevent glazing. I figured that combining that with a high contact pressure would wear down the peaks and quickly allow full contact with the pads. I've done this for years and it seems to work fairly well.

Bedding technique

Post by jjs777 »

I have read quite a few techniques...most of which all place emphasis at 60-85 mph braking - about 3-6 times depending on the pad material. After the 3-4 brake runs...then drive for at least 10 minutes to let them cool.

For the record I do not think a 20mph slow down would suffice. But that's just me. Probably depends on what you expect from braking power.

I definitely suggest googling for some more literature as it really is rocket science.
-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000

The main thing is not to introduce a lot of heat before they bed in to prevent glazing. I may be erring on the conservative side by doing this, but the results have been good. The thought of bedding pads in from 60 mph makes me cringe because of the heat being generated. I guess the thing to do is to hunt around for some manufacturers recommended break in proceedure.

Well,
I googled around and stumbled on a break in summary from various mfgs:

<a href="http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/tech/pad ...

definitely a wide range of recommended procedures.

Admin has edited to create hyperlink -

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... >jjs777 at: 10/14/04 10:19 pm

I think the easiest way to bed-in brake pads is to street-ride them for 100 miles or so being extreeeeemely respectful to red lights, other drivers' right of way, and picking every chande destiny gives you to exercise the brakes.
'97 Blue/Black Ace
'98 Gold/Black TDM
