Rear Shock Swap

Post by FZRDude »

Well, Bob and I replaced my rear shock today. It took us a whole 1.5 hrs and we stopped for coffee about 1/2 way through. The coffee was included in the 1.5 hrs.

I didn't have the sense to grab the camera every 2 minutes, but I did get a couple of shots.

Here is Bob dismantling my bike with power tools.

You have to remove the battery box and might as well remove the rear tank mount too. The rear tank mount also holds the fuel pump, so it helps to have that out of the way too.

Then the battery box support. The shock comes straight out through the top. (Thanks for the tip John)

And there you have it, Bob and a stock shock.

Shockless...

I think there was a total of 10 bolts that had to be removed for this installation. I placed the remote resovoir in the stock location because I can still get to it through the frame. I didn't want to go cutting up my new tail unit to mount it on the sub-frame. Other than that, this job can be accomplished by just about any member here on the board.
Except maybe Nate. j/k

And that is the end of my tale of Shock Swap.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
There are some who call me........Tim?
Director of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
1994 FZR 1000

so now begs the question why? Why replace your rear shock with a high performance unit at the pace that you have previously stated elsewhere that is generally a casual ride. i suspect that you will see little to no difference...albeit with the capability of increased adjustability.

curious minds want to know

Are you planning on a track day? My passions for riding faster are growing with the "new-found power" (I spent the last 6 years on a slow cruiser, okay...). A track day this coming summer is not out of the question. And yes, I was wanting to get rid of the motor and everything else on the FZ. Bonus that another 'Hood member could use it as well as several other items off the bike.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
There are some who call me........Tim?
Director of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
1994 FZR 1000

Oh yeah, that was the reason for getting the shock. It'll help me learn how to do a wheelie.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
There are some who call me........Tim?
Director of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
1994 FZR 1000

It is true. After 20+ years of riding, I don't know how to do a wheelie. Don't really care to learn either. I've had the front end really light and maybe even a little off the ground, but not something I make a habit of.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
There are some who call me........Tim?
Director of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
1994 FZR 1000

As I've said before, don't feel bad Tim cause I've never done one either.

And again as well...with my weight it would probably look like the 4th of July when I came back down. RALMAO!

Okay burn...I'm not making this up.

Very early in my FZR days...I was on my original bike circa 95 and when I was more of a squid...I did a wheely that I did not control the landing very well. All I saw were sparks flying when I landed.

Not sure to this day where the sparks came from...must have been the bottom of the exhaust - since the full exhaust has bigger ports all the way down to the collector and is visible below the fairing. But I could have sworn the sparks came more from the front wheel somewhere!

Your future wheely you are describing makes me remember the wheely racer in Canon Ball Run!!

-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000
