Output Shaft Threads

Post by mkerocket1984 »

I was going down the freeway the other day when the front sprocket on my 87 fzr1000 suddenly decided to come off the output shaft. I pulled off and found that the nut had spun off with the lock-tab washer, and that the sprocket had decided to ride on the shaft's threads (for the nut). Now, I have no threads and am trying to decide how to fix it. First I thought of putting a die on the shaft and re-threading it, but then I have to remove the engine from the frame and take off the water pump. Then I thought maybe I can take a pipe cutter and put a grove in the shaft and use a circlips/washer combo. Anybody have any thoughts or other Ideas? Thanks in advance

Casey

Yea...I just did this for a guy with a 305 Kawasaki
I think it was a 20 x 1.5 thread. I just went and got me a hex die and ran that on the shaft. You certainly have to have enough meat left to thread so you'll have to make sure that you do...
But it's easy enough to do

Jim <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... That's not good "M". If there's not enough material left to re-thread STOP there.
I changed the shaft on a transmission I sold just to avoid that problem, I know it sucks, but it might be time for a teardown.
Wishing you luck though..................
