Pilot air screws

OK, can't find out about the emulsion tubes today, so movin on.

Are these the air screws? The little recessed brass suckers? Sorry for the lousy pics.

Yep, if MacGyver only knew.

Now, next question: I have no idea how I'm going to access and accuratly adjust these. I'm tempted to pull the carbs off (or at least enough to tilt them up).

The manual says I have to drain the coolant if removing the carbs. That sucks! Any way around this? Can I loosen the carb joint bolts to tilt the carbs up without draining the coolant?

What's the secret, boys?

Well my friends, it is done, and the carbs are on the table. I have gone deeper into the beast than ever before, and the feeling is somewhat gratifying.

I drained the coolant, but I'm not sure it was necessary. In the end I figured I was better off going with the Yamaha manual and just draining the stuff.

Wow, the air screws were well off.

1. 2 turns out
2. 1.5 turns out
3. 1.5 turns out
4. 1.5 turns out

I went with 2.5 on all four, put the bike back together, and went for a ride.

Still some slight popping on decel, but way less than before. I cruised down the street opening and closing the throttle, listening to the exhaust. When I was satisfied, I flipped a U to head home.

I gave it a whack and the front tire came up so fast I couldn't believe it! Should've ripped into these things a looong time ago!

Adjusting the mixture screws sure makes a world of difference huh?

I love mine set at 2 3/4 turns, i still get some popping on decel, but that could be partially to my exup valve being wired open (broke a cable and havent gotten the new one on yet) (runs ok with the valve opened, just loose some off idle crispness and my 3500 rpm wheelies went away

)

Just a note, if Colorado is a test state on bikes, you WILL fail with those settings...

Arizona, at least Tucson and Phoenix, require emissions testing. I set my pilots at 2.5 turns out and the bike ran great. Failed emissions test. Not wanting to play trial-and-error with my bike's registration I took it to a bike shop that had an exhaust gas analyzer to set it within emissions limits. I'm not sure if they set them at 2 turns or 2 1/4 but it passed and the bike still runs well.

Nope, no testing in Colorado.
