Ok, I understand the principle of timing the cams but how on earth do you manage to get a measurement for full lift. It just seems there is no room to get a DTI in there to check valve lift?

Thanks.
mark

Whats a DTI?

I thought you could perhaps measure the diameter of the cam around its narrowest point (its base circle??)and subtract that from the cam "diameter" between the tip of the lobe and the circular part ? This would surely give the amount of lift generated by the lobe?

So if you put new cams in with higher lift you'd be able to measure the extra lift ?

someone tell me if im miles off please!

Dial Test Indicator

To measure full lift at a specific crank angle you need to measure the movement of the valve itself and compare to a degree wheel mounted on the end of the crank.
These engines are sooo damn fidley to work on and there does not seem to be much room to get the dial test indicator to do the measurment.

???????

mark

Mark, you probally thought this already, but youve tried using a bicycle spoke as a extender for the dti, theyre very slim to sneak past stuff and they have the correct thread for most dti plungers...

No, I hadn't thought of that one. Bloody good idea if they screw straight in to DTI. Thanks mate when I get the engine out I'll give that a go, I spent all winter pissing about building up a new engine for my car and now the good weather is here I start thinking about stripping my bike down

Spot the dumb ass

Mark
