Knocking and De-restriction
<br>Hello all.<br>I own an 89 FZR1000 EXUP.<br>Disturbingly I am feeling a knocking through my footpegs, predominantly on the left hand side as the power comes on between 3000 and 5000 revs. This only seems to happen in 3rd and 4th gear though. It's very strange and rather alarming.<br>I thought it was maybe the chain slapping the swing arm so I checked the tension and found it to be correct.<br>Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?<br><br>On another note, I was reading a piece in this months "Bike" magazine where the journo mentions once riding a derestricted FZR1000. Is my bike in someway restricted??????<br>If so how???<br>I find it hard to believe as it's sooooo damn powerful.<br><br>Any advice appreciated,<br><br>Hiras <p></p><i></i>

The knocking sounds like a chain that has worn un-evenly. Check the tension of your chain at various positions to see if it varys. Also, look for links that bind up. Replace your chain if you find it to be at fault. This condition will send shock loads through your drive train and will loosen your countershaft sprocket lock nut over time. <p></p><i></i>

The UK bikes came with a web moulded across the inlet manifold rubber to restict bhp. 99.9% of bikes would have been de-restricted by now as it is a dead easy job.<br><br>Mark <p></p><i></i>

Hi folks,<br>this may illicit a groan from 90% of you but the other 10% will thank me!! When adjusting the chain tension on an EXUP, the bike must be stood on the ground under its own weight. I (wrongly) used to check my chain tension with the bike on a paddock stand because I thought that was how it was done and also because it was easier to spin the rear wheel. However, I always wondered why my chain felt so tight when I used to ride off into the sunset! I bought a genuine Yamaha manual for my '89 1000 EXUP which told me how checking of ther final drive chain tension should be done....Doh!!! Now I have a lovely smooth running, snatch free bike and, luckily, I have caused no damage to the gearbox output shaft bearings due to my gross stupidity<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :o --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> !! <p></p><i></i>

the knocking
haris, i have heard that, but it wasnt the chain, or i dont think it was. mine was at freeway speeds, and it happened like once or twice a mile, then nothing for days. it was wierd... when it did happen, i thought something catostrophic would happen if i didnt figgure it out, but eventually it went away, and i never thought about it again till you mentioned it. <br><br>if its the same feeling, it felt like something, like a small block of wood was hitting my left foot peg. never on the right. allmost like someone was futsing with me. <br><br>also what the hell is a paddock, im assuming you mean a rear stand, but have a diffrent name for them across the pond..<br><br>zoid <p></p><i></i>

adjusting chain
this sounds like a stupid question, but just reading about how you say the bike should be left on ground when tightening chain.what sort of slack do you/should you leave on the chain when you tighten it? <p></p><i></i>
