Exup Front disc handing - Help!!!!!

Post by exup234 »

Hi everyone!,

I have recently found this site and must say that it's brilliant!!! A mine of information.I have been riding bikes since the age of 16........................is it really 24 years ago!!! I currently have a 1990 exup 1000 and 1990 RGV 250.

I am in the process of re-building my 1990 exup1000 and need a new front left brake disc. My Haynes manual states that each disc is handed right or left and that discs are marked to show direction of rotation in use, to identify which side of the wheel it fits.

Guess what! - my stock Yamaha discs are not marked and both look identical!!
I checked with my local Yamaha dealer today, and he confirmed that discs are indeed handed, although he did'nt know how to tell left from right either!

I have been offerred a disc from an XJR1200 (I am in the UK) which looks identical to my discs, but the seller can't say which side it's for!!

What would happen if a right was fitted on the left and vice versa?

What is done in the manufacturing process to "Hand" the discs? Do they have a direction of rotation like tyres?

Thanks in advance for any advice offerred.

Paul

First off, <img src="http://www.smiliegenerator.de/s24/smili ...

Second, although this is new to me, I'd think that the direction that the holes are drilled would make the difference. Alas, I just went down and looked (very briefly) I can see no difference between the two. The vent holes in the rotor look to be straight drilled. So I think my answer is a moot point. Sorry.

Tim

Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... Rotors

Post by dragracer1951 »

The only thing I can think of that would MAYBE make them different from right to left would be the amount of offest they would have.....
IF you set then on a table, side by side, is one taller than the other?
I just went and looked at my 95 and it LOOKS like the left one has more offest then the right one......
But I haven't gone and measured....but I COULD...
Jim

discs

I replaced my discs with secondhand DUCATI brembo's when one of mine warped, they weren't marked left/right and I couldn't see any difference between them and since they've been fitted - no problem ,they might have gone on the same side that they came off or might not anyway I believe that they are the same and can be fitted on either side
regards
chris

exup front disc handing update

I managed to obtain an FZR 1000 parts book on C.D and both front discs are shown with the same part number; so both are the same.

My Yamaha dealer was wrong in thinking they were handed

I took delivery of an excellent used Brembo item (thanks e-bay!) which I fitted today.

I'll bleed the brakes tomorrow so all being well, I'll be on the road for the weekend.

Paul.
