My bike (87) usually takes about 3 1/2 qts. So if you pick up 4 qts you'll have enough plus some leftover. I run 20/40 as well.

Does your year have a spin-on filter, or is it like mine where it's an assembly you take apart to replace the filter element?
"I have come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass...
and I'm all out of bubble-gum."

I've checked Wal-Mart before, but they cut off the FZRs at 89 or 90 (I think). Places like Autozone can get them, but it's a flip of the coin if they'll have them in stock.
"I have come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass...
and I'm all out of bubble-gum."

As far as the filter goes...just give them your bike info and they can look it up for you. Like I said they may not have it in stock and may have to order it. I know the pricing at Autozone was cheaper than what it was at my local shop.

Oil however is doubtful. At least around here (northern Indiana) NOBODY carries the 20/40 except the bike shops. Wal-Mart had 20/50, but I opted to stick with 20/40.

Also, I would recommend replacing the big O-ring that goes on the lip of the filter housing. Should only be a couple bucks, and it will help seal the housing to the block.

One last thing...when you go to put the assembly back on, be careful when tightening down the bolt since that is actually part of the filter. If you tighten it down too far you can crack the filter housing....trust me I found out the hard way!
"I have come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass...
and I'm all out of bubble-gum."

Drain Plug Gasket

Post by djalbin »

The oil drain plug has a metal gasket that your suppose to replace with each oil change. Yamaha dealer has them for approximately $0.97 or so. Gasket allows you to snug the drain plug without over tightening it or having any oil leak. Oil drain plug torque spec is 31 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). I don't know if it's ever happened, but they caution against over tightening the drain plug to avoid damage to the crankcase.
Don

Oops...forgot to mentiont that one too (thanks Don).

One other o-ring to consider replacing: There is another small one that is on the filter bolt. It provides a seal between the filter element cover and the filter bolt. This is another one that is a cheapie so you may want to grab one of those too.

Once you get the assembly apart check the spring and washer to see if they are ok. These are cheap to replace as well if you need to. Long as they look in good shape you should be fine.

"I have come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass...
and I'm all out of bubble-gum."

Hey thanks for all the advice. I bought the o-ring and the gasket. so you guyz know if you special order the oil filter at Checkers, it will come with a gasket for the oil filter and a plastic o-ring instead of metal. this will save your about $7.00 from the dealer.
