Orright brothers, so what about running in?
By the Lord Harry am I pleased to get the beast back?
Pleased aint the word for it.
After two months sans beast, I finally got it back from it's top end rebuild.
1 set gaskets, 1 set rings, 1 (yes one) piston, 12 inlet valves, 1 EXUP pulley, some springs, two months and £600 later the beast came home.
Spent the rest of the daylight hours (I wish I had a garage) after work scrubbing the engine, degreasing the chain, lubricating, generally applying TLC, bolting on the plastics and cleaning it.
There were two rubbery things the shop gave back to me that they couldn't (read didn't want to) re-fit. They look like some sort of protection that might go around the radiator sub framey thing to stop water splashing up from the road onto the wiring loom etc.....
I offered them to the bike and tried to make sense of it ...even consulted the ruddy Haynes but no joy. Nemind.
Any how......now the beast has new rings (finally) the mechanic told me that I should ride up to 5k revs for fifty miles and then add 1000 revs for each fifty miles that I clock up for 150 miles, meaning that the total "cautious" stage should last no more than 200 miles. After that he says I can ride as maniacally (read errrr...normally and sometimes rather high into the rev range) as I want.
He also intimated that being over cautious would result in the barrels glazing up and that all I need to do is ride 200 controlled miles to take the edge off the rings.
What say you experts out there?
Is 200 miles enough for a new set of rings?
Should I take more care than recommended to me?
As usual, any advice greatly appreciated.
Sorry for the essay, I am just soooooo happy to have my EXUP back.
P.S. Does anyone (in the UK) want my bastard ZXR750? It's up for grabs...offers over £500 taken.

Running in is like tyres....Ask the question and you'll get a different answer from every person (Although at least in this forum everyone will respect each others opinion on it and not get into a flame war )

I would think 200miles is plenty for the work you've had done. When selling new bikes and got asked the "What about running in" question (N.B. advice doesn't apply to 2 stroke MXers!!). I always told customers "Mate, Japanese technology is fantastic these days, the factory knows it's gonna get a hiding and they wouldn't put a two year warranty on it if it couldn't handle it". Seriously though, I don't beleive you should ever baby a bike when running it in, the most important thing is to make the engine work. Vary RPM's and load etc, use all the gears and you'll be sweet.

You can also go into a mineral vs synthetic oil while running in argument aswell but thats a whole other thread<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... iker_3.gif ALT=":riding">

Clint.

'87 FZR1000T
gen·e·sis (jen-i-sis)n. pl.:The coming into being of something; the origin.

Those Rubbery things

Hiras I think I can help on this. Those rubbery things are probably about 100cm long and non descript looking?
If so, they are heat insulators, they install between the frame and forward side of the engine, there is a slot cut in each one midway, it goes on the frame lugs that hold the lower radiator straps, you will have to drop the straps ( one at a time) to re-install the heat shields. Just look at them for a while, my bike never communicated that it wanted them back either, but like vitamins, sometimes it just doesn't know whats good for it. Good luck.

If they are the heatshields then I’d read this:

mototuneusa.com

he mentions specific to an R6, but the same deal. You have to subscribe, but it’s free & never had any grief from it.

He also has a section on running in. Warning, this site will consume many hours reading but is very interesting.
