exup valve problem

Post by nickocaz26 »

i have an FZR1000 Exup 1989 which had a seized exup valve, previous owner said he had serviced regularly, LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE!!!!!
Anyway, i have unseized, cleaned up etc...2 bolts sheared when trying to remove cover onto exhaust body, have drilled those out and all seemed ok, except now the pully rotates very freely until i tighten the bolts after re-fitting the gasket/end plate, this results in the pulley getting tighter and tighter until it can not be moved, will probably have to replace valve as either the end plate or shaft must be distorted, but will try and get used part if possible. Question - is the EXUp valve common for other models also, knowing this will give me more choice in sourcing used part. HELP!!!!

hi
try replacing the bearing inside the exhaust be carefull (unless you have magnetic gizmo's to hand) removing it best to take the downpipes and end can of bit of a knightmare but probably the best way.
trust me it might be expensive but buy new when you can? when it comes to the exup valve it makes a hell of a difference
bill
billybodge2@aol.com

Don’t feel so bad, the previous owner probably did pay through the nose to get the bike serviced, but I wonder how many shop mechanics would check if the EXUP was rotating.

My EXUP valve is very low mileage as it has been sitting under the house for a few years (have a full system) & despite being dry under there it was seized solid. Man it’s a heavy bit of kit.

Do just the Yamaha Sport/SportTouring bikes have the EXUP system? Or do other model's have it?

Tim
Director of Entertainment (eddieandthecrusiersmc.com).

The exup valve was the only one that got it from what I know. I don;t think even the FJ got it. I do know the fzr1000 was THE first production bike to receive it...and it first occurred during the mid 80's..complete exup history can be found at yamaha design cafe

I don't even know if they still call it an exup vlave for the R1. Do they? Or did they rename it?

Did the FZR750 87-88 ever get it? Probably didn't need it.

I know that the 86 FZ750 didn't have it. The 03 FJ1300 doesn't. Hmmm, what else.

Tim
Director of Entertainment (eddieandthecrusiersmc.com).

89 was 1st year used. Yamaha got the idea after power reed valves helped 2 stroke tunning. This gives the FZR 1000 the smooth linear power delivery that NONE of the bikes of the era could replicate. The system even saw italian usage in the bimota family. Yamaha used it on a few FZR 400 and 600's too, but were not that useful. The YZF 750 and 1000 used it, and yes the R1 uses it too, even with Fuel injection. ALL of the big 4 now have similar sytems in their exhausts, it just took them 10 years to figure it out. ABout your seized valve Nick, I've got one, complete; $20.00 and it's yours. Works, came out of my 93 header that was damaged in the deer accident.
CHUCK D.
