150 miles rear tyre punctured, boooo hooooo!!!

Post by Marcelo »
Hi, Acers.
Yesterday night while returning home under the rain, my Ace's new Sportec M1 rear was hurt by something which caused a 1/8" crack. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">
Any ideas if that's repairable? Some fellow riders told me fixed tyres are no longer reliable for hard riding... Will I have to buy a new tyre before having tasted enough this one? <img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... ng_sad.gif ALT=":sad">
'97 Blue/Black Ace
'98 Gold/Black TDM

Any tire is questionable if punctured. I believe that all tire manufactures void the speed rating if the tire has been punctured. Meaning they won't guarantee that the tire will hold together at any speed.

Sadly enough, I'd get a new one. My life is worth more than a $200 tire.

Err on the side of safety.
Tim
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
Insert Joke Here
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
'94 FZR 1000

If it's any consolation to you, the last two back tires on my R1 had to be changed due to punctures. The first time it felt squirrelly while doing 100 on the highway. I took the exit gingerly and eased to the stop sign. When I stopped and looked back it was sitting flat on the rim and the rubber was hot and gummy. New tires are definitely in order. I check my tires, brakes and critical parts prior to a ride to try to swing the odds in my favor.

JUST PLUG IT!

Post by jjs777 »

I have had punctured tires in the past and had no issues plugging them with the over the counter tire repair kits and ran them for thousands of miles.

This is 2004 - not 1904. Of course the tire manufacturers and retailers are gonna say buy a new one. They'll stand to gain.

I know there will be 9 out of 10 folks that say oh my gosh dump the bad tire. But then there's me...especially for the rear tire. Just plug it.

I would probably NOT do a track day however. Okay...lets say you DO a track day...whats the worst that will happen? The tire will go flat...and more than likely you'll notice the difference well in advance - heck I notice if I'm off just a few psi.

-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... >jjs777 at: 10/21/04 11:41 pm

Well John I can respect your position...
But you don't know what kind of damage the cords have sustained and we DO know the forces a rear tire is subjested to
It won't just "go flat" It MAY just catastrophically fail...
for the hunnert an eighty bux, I for one would replace it

Jim

I like 'what-ifs' and I do agree with dragracer and getting a new tire. But....

And will only add this for thought.

I believe motorcycle tires are so over-engineered that I would wager a small fortune that I could poke over a dozen holes in it, plug it as I have done....go out for the next 2-3 years and beat the snot out of it. And I would probably live to tell about it with no ill affects.

My only humble point is that...I would be more worried about a young teenager behind the wheel of a 5000lb SUV than I would be of a plugged tire.

and since I brought up a 5000lb SUV....reminds me of ChuckD's recent tale...as well as my buddy got whacked a few weeks ago by a soccer mom in her SUV and took out him and his beautiful Busa. (one of the guys I had gone to the dragway with this year).

Perhaps I am the only hack here that wouldn't pay 2nd thought to a bike tire getting plugged. I wonder if I'm the only one? And I'm not saying that I would make sustained back to back runs at 150+mph but normal street/highway driving is all I'm suggesting is ok.

-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000
