oil running down kick stand . . .

Post by NorCalRyda »

wuddup fellas, i recently noticed that the foot of the kick stand leaves an oil footprint. i guess theres oil running down the kick stand. the leak doesnt seem that big. i whiped down the kick stand and all around the areas above it, to see where the leak was comming from but didnt see anything. the next day, i still got another little oil footprint. have any of you fellas had this problem? thanks - tone

I have an 87 FZR 1k, and I had a small leak like that that turned into a large one. The first time I noticed the leak was right after I purchased my bike. After investigating I found the drain plug was loose, when the stand was down the oil would seep out and run down the stand.

The second time I had the problem it started small (just a couple drops here and there) then I ended up losing about 2 quarts in 5 minutes. The seal behind the countershaft sprocket had somehow worked its way loose. When the bike was running the oil pressure would push the oil out. The oil dripped onto my stand and I would leave a "footprint" when I parked.

Could either be counter shaft seal, gear select seal or the famous trap.......chain lube.....
Clint.

'87 FZR1000T
gen·e·sis (jen-i-sis)n. pl.:The coming into being of something; the origin.

mine has been leaving drops of oil on the garage floor, so I just cleaned everything, went for a ride, and found a trail of oil coming from the shift shaft.

Wash everything down, dust it with baby powder, and go for a short ride. Pop the cover off and you will see a stain from the oil on the powder. You will then have your answer grass hopper.

When I went to get my replacement shifter shaft oil seal, they gave me the wrong part. Looks like a stocking number error where the cross reference seal OD is 18mm vs. the 22 mm that it needs to be.

original p/n: 93109-12075-00
cross referenced p/n: 93109-12053-00

correct p/n: 93102-12321-00 (12mm ID/22mm OD)

<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... pistol.gif ALT=":pistol">

A little gem I just noticed and have to change out is the nuetral sensor and the little o ring that goes behind it. Looks like oil is coming around the shift linkage. but its coming down from that white plastic sender unit. You might want to check that as well.

Good Luck,

Matt
"...and we want to be free to ride our machines without being hassled by The Man!.."

On to another area of concern, especially since it is happening to me.
<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... ananna.gif ALT=":banana">
The water pump shaft seal can fail and has a design built in to leak oil vs. mixing into the water pump itself. About $30 in seals and a bit of elbow grease can replace the needed parts.
