K/N podfilters inside airbox

Hi has anyone tried to use the pod filters inside the oem airbox without lid?
I was going to buy a K/N drop in filter but rememberd having an set of the oval pods sitting around.
My thoughts on this are that it should work.
Theoretically the filters should flow more air but still have the
same characteristics of the airbox?
Someone tried this before or something simular, please let me know before I go ahead with my idea
Mick

If you have the airbox fitted all you can use is a drop in filter, pod filters fit straight onto the carbs.
creed

Hi Creed so there is nothing for them to attach to on the inside of the airbox?
Mike

No I'm afraid not.
The airbox attatches to the carbs with 4 rubber manifolds which attach to and protrude into the airbox.
At the point that they attach there is approx 1/2" of clearance between the boots and airbox, I suppose you could dis-assemble the airbox, remove the boots and see if the pods would fit through the holes that are left in the airbox, but then you would have attach them and seal them in.
A K&N drop in filter correctly fitted is a far better option.
creed

I have a rusty brain cell churning to life in response to your query mnb - this comes up from time to time, but our own flyingcircus (I'm pretty sure) posted a well informed response to this question once before.
With the top of the airbox off, it loses it's functionality right then and there.
There's some high-falutin science involving hydrodynamics/aerodynamics and the propensity for mob behavior in high velocity air molecules as they move through the inlet snorkel into the closed volume area of the airbox which seems to induce an inlet direction resonance that ultimately deposits it'self at the carb venturis in a very controlled fashion.
Lose the top of the air box and the snorkels, and you will also lose this wonderful little bit of induction magic in the process.
Top end power will suffer as a result, with obvious flat spots and lack of throttle response.
If you want to get rid of the airbox, you can use the oval pods with FCR carbs and get reasonable results, but fuel mileage will suffer.
I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, but if you are the one to finally make it work better, please post up and let the rest of us know how.
Ok, I'm off the soap box now.
<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... oapbox.gif ALT=":soap">
Genisx1AtYahooeyDotCommaMomma

Actually you CAN make the pods work. But you have to put them on top of some carefully designed velocity stacks. You have to have something to act as a border for the pressure waves so they can become resonant....
Problem is that I just don't think there's enough room under the tank of an FZR to fit all that in there...

Jim <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
Strangely my bike seems to be one of the few that works well with the pod filters, stage 3 dynojet and the air correctors plugged, just as Mr dynojet intended.
I have recently changed the main jets from 142 to 128 and even though, it it slightly more responsive I haven't noticed a great deal of difference.
maybe another dyno run will clarify matters.
creed

I seem to remember one British mag a few years back doing a story on EXUPS. They dyno'd an EXUP with the airbox snorkel on and off. With the snorkel off, it lost about 5-10 hp and had some drivability problems. They even lost some power when they took out the funky donut that sits on top of the filter.
"There are only three sports in the world: bullfighting, mountain climbing, and motorsports. The rest are mere games." Hemingway

Hi I've read that the ram air will provide cooler air and and also a lot less turbulence free.
This is a common problem with the pod filters fitted, supposedly it makes the slides flutter because of the uneven air distrubution.
This is something I was thinking about the other day,on the yzf600r there is ram air.How come the don't use it on the 1000r ?
I've also read about a airbox mod where someone mention cutting out an oval to let more air in,does anyone have any knowledege?
This is more a curiosity question than a want to do.
My Ace has 2 different jets in it.
125 mains on the inner carbs ans 127.5 on the outer carbs.
Is this the oem set up?
Mick

All I have is the velocity stacks, no pods/airbox/filter, they've been lying in my garage since I bought them. The bike is perfectly ridable under 3000rpm, even without the exup. If you don't believe me you're more then welcome to fly out to Cape Town South Africa to give the bike a try.

Velocity stacks on 41mm flatslides and perfectly ridable under 3000rpm, I can putter along like grandma if I feel like it...
