Tire repair or replace?

I went into the garage the other day to get on my bike and ride to work and the rear tire was flat. I have managed to pickup a small screw somewhere in my travels. I called a local Yamaha dealer and he said they may be able to put in a patch. I spoke with another dealer and he said they don't do that because they feel it is unreliable. Shoot, when this happens in one of my cars, I just plug it. I'm sure the best answer is to replace the tire(s) and I want to be safe. The tires are not new, but they do have plenty of life left and I am a commuter 90% of the time. Any thoughts?

okay great question I might get some heat for this....but just PLUG IT ! This will cause a debate, no doubt. I had a Speed Triple that I put a set of Pilot Sports on when they first came out. Next day on the way to the boat in the morning I picked up a nail..... That night after having gone back home and gotten another bike to get to work on, I spent ANOTHER $240 for a new 190/55/17..... I don't know about your commute but when I was doing one...we could have EASILY hit a buck and a half... The other thing that I think you fail to realize, is you have NO idea of the carcass damage that has been done by whatever punctured the tire. This can lead to catistrophic failure. I have plugged a tyre before with the do it yourself kits, pushing the plug through from the outside and had no problems, including numerous top speed runs and wearing it down until there is no tread left. I would say if you get it done with a mushroom from the inside with the tyre off you are virtually guaranteed it will work! chris

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm thinking that I might go with the dealer installed patch, unless they want a bunch of money to do it. I am having a serious debate with myself over this. I would really rather get new tires (I always replace in pairs) and the ones mounted now have enough wear to make me feel ok (fiscally speaking) about doing it. However, I don't want to buy new tires every time I pick up a nail, that could get real expensive. I also don't want a tire to blow apart and 90mph. I guess it is just one of those things....

I should also add that if it were the FRONT tire I would not risk a plug. I believe the rear is controllable in most situations with a failure - albeit within reasonable speeds. I'm with Creed here. I ride with a vulcanised rubber mushroom plug tubeless repair kit. They work fine and though you're not supposed to, i've ridden at high speeds on them without issue. My absolute personal preference is to use plugs for emergency road-side repairs and for eeking the last out of older tyres. If you've got a punctured new tyre, Ultraseal is just the thing. It's tested at speeds of up to 150MPH and I can say from experience works very well. The last bottle I bought fixed 3 punctures. The manufacturers claim it also increases tyre life but I don't know of there's any truth in that.......... Jason

I ALWAYS put Ultra seal in new tyres never had a puncture since it's about £25 for three tyres worth and is supposed to distribute the tyre heat evenly to stop the tyre disintigrating over time by running too hot. I recommend it cos it's risky enough out there anyway and it's nice to know that those tyres are gonna stay inflated.

im withnjim on this one although i can see the points raised by all, plugs - well i would in my car,and i have kids in there. 3 other wheels should anything give, on my bike......no way...after enlarging a puncture to take the plug, should it fail thats a hell of a quick deflation time, even @50mph this is gonna have a drastic effect on handling.... and a lot of handling to bring safely to a halt... yes a replacement tyre is expensive but what value do you place on your life... yes plugs are cheap - but i'd rather be cashless than lifeless..... steve

There is a combo plug/patch that can be installed by a dealer tha is considered safe. If it's the front tire, spend the money and replace it. I've ridden with a plugged rear tire on the street but would never think about using it at the track. I have a rear tire with 3 plugs, and maybe 2000 miles. If I had bought a new rear tire for each puncture I would have spent $200 more at least, and would have bought three tires for 2000 miles. I didn't wear that many out. Don't know if I'd do that on a front, but so far, no troubles with a plugged rear. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o"> It is getting replaced this year, but that's more because I want better tires. I got a D208 that has 3 patches and is on a spare rim for my brother's F4i and I plan on makin smoke! Otherwise, depends on your riding habits. If you're a canyon carver, go with new. I was running dunlop 208's. Was on a trip and picked up a nail in the rear tire.Plugged it and ran for 200 km. Could have run it for another 2000 km or so based on tread but opted for new tires.Anytime I was 150 km/hr plus, I couldn't stop thinking about the plug so I went with peace of mind. By the way, I installed Bridgestone Batlaxx, front and back and I am impressed, decent price, great performance.120/70/17 front, 180/55/17 rear.
