What's the diff. 'tween Blue spot and Gold spot?
Brake calipers of course!

I've got the blue spot, now I've seen some gold spots and it got me wondering.

Anyone know???

I've learned from reading posts on this board there is no difference

I guess since the r1's and r6's recieved gold/blue the differencemay have been in the m/c ...but then maybe that was the same too

In 1997 Yamaha began using one piece 4 piston calipers over the two piece design they had been using on all models to that point. The YZF 1000 had a pipe that went from one side of the caliper to the other. In 1998 when Yamaha introduced the R1, it used the same design but with the cross-over internal. The part #'s on the R6 and R1 caliper are different, which means that there is a difference, but what exactly those differences are, I'm not sure of mostlikey internal passages.

Until 03, the R1 calipers were blue, then Yamaha finesed the internals to give better feel and gave the calipers a gold dot to signify the difference. The one piece design is stiffer and less resistance from two units being held together as previous., thusby allowing Yamaha to use a lighter 4 piston set-up opposed to the 6 pots they previously ran.

Is the R6 caliper better than the R1 ? For our retrofitting application, I would suggest using R1 calipers, but I've yet to compare bikes with a R6 vs an R1 set of 4 pots, so beyond the information listed above, I can not say for certain.

I thought the blue dots were til '01! '02-'03 got the gold dots. Anyways, I had R1 calipers on the '88 and R6's on the '89 and there wasn't a noticeable difference to me

That's asnswered that then. :D

Cheers everyone, thanks for taking the time to satisfy my curiosity. Now it just remains for some specialist company to bring out the ally inserts anodised in 1000 different colours to match our fetish anodised fairing and screen bolts  I'd go with bright orange to match my new paint scheme.

Barney, you are correct, sorry. Gold dots started in 02. I have a Brembo MC and throttle locking bar ends that are all a brass/ gold hue. Plus the forks on the R1 are the same hue, so with the gold dot calipers, it looks bad a$$!

Same here Chuck,

Brembo Snowflake Rotors = Gold
R6 Calipers = Gold Dot
Bar-end Throttle Lock = Brass (gold color)
Stock '94 USD Forks = Gold

That may be one of the upgrades Yamaha did in 02. Internal changes are always hard to find unless released in Yamaha News or an article covering model was that informative. I can't say for sure.

DUDE,
I agree, the brass is BAD A$$. You have teh exact same set-up as mine and it doesn't get much better. I will be trying the Radial MC next season and will let you know results.

So you got any extra blue dots laying around Jimbo???

I was so ticked the other day. Ebay had a full brake system from either a R1 or R6. All 3 calipers, master cylinders AND braided lines. Went for like $90. Didn't have the money to pick them up this week :hissy
