To sum up, to us mere mortals, Yamaha has dome a good job with the std port design, and a bit of light cleaning up is all that's required.
Yes, this would be their first series of sportbike motors where FEM/CFD computers were used to give an excellent port design. Unless you want
the motor to work at only 10,000-12,000 rpm, I would stick with the
original port DESIGN. That's what I did.

The reason I post caps for DESIGN is that the shape in your engine isn't
quite what was designed, because of mass production. There will be
sharp edges, casting roughness, spatter, misalignment (during casting or bolt-up), and grooves from the valve seat machining tools.

I took a dremel-type tool (cheap hardware-store brand though) and
cleaned all that up. It's called PORT-MATCH and POLISH. Google that
and have a read. I didn't polish to a mirror finish, just like Kiwi I
left it with a "brushed, or coarse-sanded" look.

I ended up with a very smooth power curve, and a bigger power boost
than could be expected from just a 4% capacity increase (1040kit at the
same time).

I also polished up the combustion chamber as smooth as possible without
changing the size or shape of it at all. This has helped me run on normal
pump gas with compression boosted to 12.7 and no pinging/knocking.
Not the cheapest crappy gas, wouldn't put that in my mower, but
the middle one.

Good,

K, so 60grit wheel on the intakes and smooth as your baby's bumb on the chamber and exhaust. I am changing many of the internals so hopefully the porting work will help to change things positively.

Did the port work help out with mileage though Graham? Obviously you weren't able to tell on the back to back dyno test but...? Any change in the seat of the pants dyno either?

Yes Yes I know, I said, I'm building a project YZF1070

Basement is done now, 850 finished and gone...
Gotta get the new siding up on the house.

okay wonderful. just smoothing it out is what I'll do then. Im in the process of buying some YZF 750 cams :) soo do any of you lot know excatly what intake and exhaust should be degree to?

Sickle, by over sizing the 3rd intake valve(the center one im guessing?) by 1mm to you have to buy a new valve and where do you find these things? lol

So sooo far this is what im going to start putting together

YZF 750 cams
5 spd trans to get under/back cut
Billet clutch basket
Polished and balance crank(sickle, yours looks so beautiful I just have too) :)
JE 1040 kit
Valve guide seals
Full engine gasket kit
Factory pro shift kit

some list but if I start grouping things together now I should have it all squared away by end of the season

Also, Are you guys running stock gearing? or a 16/48 set up.
gonna look for a gasket kit now. Hopefully they come with valve seals :)

Sorry to hijack your thread sickle. The crank porn is so beautiful

Hey Tony,

No worries 'bout the hijack at all,

You can find valves from Manley, Ferrea (sp ), try orient-express, you might even find a valve supplier on eBay, sorry don't have links, I'd have to go looking myself. At least those are the two kinds and supplier I'm familiar with right now at the drop of a hat.

As far as gearing goes, I think the most popular combination is 17/49, not to mention the tire size swap of 120/70 up front and 180/55 out back. 17/50 would be better as the rule of thumb is for every three you gain on the back it's like dropping one on the front, but, it's damned near impossible to find a good friggen 50 tooth sprocket. Also quite wise to pull the little washer deally thing out of the upper fork so you can pull them up a mm or two and replace your dogbones raising the rear end. For my height 5'10", I went with 158's and they were perfect.

Cheers.

Sorry Michael, being a dedicated race bike, fuel consumption is not something I've taken careful note of, and most of our races are 6 lap sprints, with 20 minute (16 lap) practices - and I haven't managed to run out, but give me more time and I can always give it a go for you... ;)

okay so if I decide to go that way manley is who I'll most likely go with..

17/49 was what i was going to go with but i kept reading about how amazing this 16/48 is... Personally I think the gearing is great but going 2 up in the rear will make a nice difference down low.

I've seen dogbones on ebay "rising kit" and im sketchy on them over ebay. Has Dr.Jim supplied you guys with yours? I adjusted my preload the other day, made a nice difference, I went to the second ring from bottom, I have racetech internals, not sure the exact set up but the PO told me he had them sent out and they do have the sticker on the forks....They feel nice so im believing they are lol I may back out to the 3rd ring but want to get used to this. I have a 180/55 michelin 2ct in the rear as the Avon I had finally bit the dust. the front is a 120/60... still has tread but a new, matching 120/70 2ct will be ordered soon.

Yeah Im 5' 10" 180lb's and think that it'd be a nice set up in the gear to raise it.

When talking abou degreeing the Cam(s) are we talking about the actual camshafts or the cam sprocket(s) and making those adjustable? A longer duration and lift, so the valves will stay open for a little bit longer correct?

With mods like these is it possible for the engine to rev higher and pull a better power curve(I mean for it to still gain HP past 10.5 and torque past 8 grand)

These are the dogs danglies, http://www.adjustmenttech.net/images/Adjusters/6.jpg
fully adjustable dogbones, unfortunately the set I have hanging on my wall only works for the YZF series, not the FZR ones.

Not just beautiful, very functional. A minute or two and you can go from a raised back end for quick steering, to a dropped rear for drag strip bragging rights. The same kind of mechanism as your shift pedal adjuster, just bigger. Fixed links are cheaper for sure, but totally adjustable is nice.

Hmm I suppose I'll just make my own in that case. they looked familar. Like the push/pull connectors used on elevators and rudder on a plane... My dad flys so getting these should be cake :)

Just be careful of quality with the adjustable links, as two guys in the fz1 club have had them break.

Never liked adjustables myself, aren't we trying to shed weight on Porky, 'sides isn't just as easy to get another set of bones.

McFizzer, I did get my first set of dog bones from Jim, however, he's no longer taking part in our site it seems. Little bankrupcy, little screwing people over, little this, little a that type idea. So.... you might want to steer clear of that one I'd say.

I think Doug(Haunter) has mentioned he can make them for dudes before really? Not much too them really so I suppose anyone could really make'm if they had the tools and know how?
