Past and Present Toys

Postby idroppedit » Sun Apr 15, 2012 2:29 am

Always been a bit of a Yamaha man, by accident mainly.

First bike was a 99 R6 which i unfortunately don't have any pics of :(

2nd a 2002 R1 which i wrote off after 12000km's

3rd this 2003 R1 which got a make over to this paint job after 124,000 kms on her. She's not just a pretty girl, but a work horse. Currently off the road getting a whole bunch of stuff done (hopefully Harris swingarm, Ram air, got a Graves stroker crank, Carillo rods, 2mm over pistons, just waiting on some cash for some fun stuff like head mods etc before i start reassembly - aiming for 200hp at the rear)

and before the paint job :)

The 02 R1 trackbike i bought a couple of years ago and just sold

and the poor little fzr400 i picked up for $400 not long ago.

Grey import, 1wg frame and motor, 3EN2 plastics, SP swinger and god only knows what front end! 80,000 kms young, needs valve shimming or new valves.

only pic i have at the moment :(

I'm pretty sure there is probably another thread along these lines, but, what the hey, it's always fun to remember past glory and dispair.

Ok then, I'll start with the most embarrasing first, a, '84 XLX Harley Sportster, bought from a friend with a blown gearbox bearing and broken primary belt in run down condition for $1000.
Spent $1500 getting it running well and a cosmetic tart up, and sold for $7500, complete with home made drag pipes and rattle can paint job.
I rode it for all of 400km before deciding that I just couldn't do the Harley thing, the bloke who bought it thought it was brilliant.

and, actually one of my favorites, an '81 XS650 Yamaha special, converted to a cafe racer (still under construction here), Suzuki GSX450 tank, Ducati 900SS replica seat and home made rear sets & pipes (didn't grind the welds down on this one).
The new owner bought it in 2005, lives two streets from me, still has it, and still rides it at every opportunity.

This is my current road bike, a SV1000S bought new in 2005, now with 35,000kms, and I'm not even entertaining selling it cause I just love riding it so much :D

And, of course, the FZR

I've got some photo's of my old T500, GS1000S and TS125 somewhere and I'll upload them when I can dig them out and scan them

right then, time for some others to provide photographic evidence of your present and past sins...

Nice taste in bikes Kiwi... love the sepia tones... Bet you wish you still had them...

the T500 is a favourite bike of mine. Only because it was the first real bike I came in contact with. When I was 14-15 years old I saw an add for a T500 on the gate post of house I passed walking home from school. I went in to the house and met a really warm elderly Italian couple, who allowed me to marvel and yearn. that bike stirred something deep and primal in me.

The old fellow set me up and allowed-showed me how ride around the backyard on it... I have never felt so invigorated, passionate, thankful.

Of course I didn't have any money, I was a school kid from a big family walking home from school! Though, I remember I rode it around the backyard on more than one occasion... around and around.

With hindsight I don't think they ever expected I was going to buy the bike, but I'm thankful that they entertained and enthused me. A happy memory for sure. :)

I know what you saying there spook, I test rode the T500 and couldn't believe the amount of low down power it has, well, it would have after the TS125 I had been ringing the neck of for the previous 6 months.

The first bike I ever rode was a friends stripped down 1950 Royal Enfield 350 single bush basher. The deal was 'if you can start it, you can ride it' no worries mate (couldn't walk for days afterwards - man could that thing kick back...).

Nice bunch of machines Idroppedit, nice name too btw, love the paint lightning paint on the R1. Welcome to the site btw.

My own FZR1000 is not in use as I'm doing somewhat the samething you're doing with your R1, although I only hope I don't end up with 200 at the back tire, riding a Gen 1 FZ-1 around currenty.

Cheers
Michael
