My 89 'fighter project

since my bike is changing majorly i thought a new thread was in order. as some of you may have read shortly after repainting the lowers i lowsided. bent the left bar and rashed up the left side and upper really bad. broke my left arm in the process and had a plate put in.

so the bike's soon to be a streetfighter. got it all stripped down awaiting parts. got a pair of $230 harris clip-ons on ebay for $80. got a trail tech vapor speedo on the way, as well as an acerbis cyclops headlight. over the winter i'll be putting a different tail on, most likely first gen R6. i may also drop the motor and while i'm doing the valves paint the frame.

will have new pics next week when the clip-ons and light get here.

got the stitches and cast off today. have to wear a splint and do exercises for 3 weeks. had 18 stitches and the incision is 4 inches long.

that photo was taken while my bike was still here. i had my brother in law ride it to his house to put in his garage. he's only ridden a couple times so it was HILARIOUS to follow him. stalled it once and it was bucking like crazy.

since then i've stripped the headlights, upper stay, speedo, and bars off.

Glad to hear that your alright and back on the mend and your brother in law didn't let the bike run away with him

sounds like your going to have plenty of time to tinker with it. are you going to spray it or keep it the same colours.

haven't decided on color yet but it's definitely not going to be the same. thinking black at the moment. maybe with bright green wheels.

put the light and the clocks on. waiting till i get some coin for the tail. still haven't decided on a color. probably black.

that sure looks like the stock 130 on there dude, is that right?
You know moving away from the stock sizes into a 120/70 and 180/55 really makes a VAST improvement on the handling and other stuff as well.

running a pirelli diablo corsa III 120/70 front and conti road attack 180/55 rear. i think it's just forced perspective making it look bigger than it is.

Wow I would never run 2 different tires brands on a bike I planned on leaning at all. They would have different grip and heat up at different rates...The Pirelli is top of the line and the Conti just isnt!!!

i bought the corsas as a set. the rear went, so i replaced it with the conti due to mileage concerns. i live in south dakota where there are no twisties what so ever. if i were to go to the track i'd get a new set of supercorsas. for the street running two different tires is of almost no consequence. the biggest problem when running two different tires doesn't come nearly as much from rubber compounds than it does from profile.

a slightly better picture. still need to paint it. i really should've done it before i started riding again. now that i have i don't want to suffer the down time required to actually paint it. i just wanna ride!

Whatever you are going to do with the frame, do it right now!

That is when I powdercoated my frame, when the motor was out.

yeah i was planning on filling the dents in the frame and painting it.

know if bondo will bond to aluminum or anything that will do a better job?

I'm seriously thinking of powder coating mine, Tim.
How did you prevent the powdercoat from sticking to the places you didn't want it, eg. Head bearing races, swingarm pivot bolt hole, engine mounting holes etc???

And...
How far do you have to prep the frame? Do they do the prep work or would I have to ensure it was grease, dirt, etc free before I took it to them?

The powdercoat won't stick to filler (bondo) so if you have a dented frame you're probably better off painting it.

When they prep for powdercoat, they have to media blast the part themselves to ensure it is perfectly clean.

The bearing surfaces and parts that don't need to be coated are then masked off as normal before the powder is applied

A bugger that about filler. I want to blank off the inlet holes in the frame spars and mess around with the fairing.

I took my frame to the painters 3 times and twice they told me that it wasn't clean enough, so get it as clean as you possibly can. Oh and ALL bearings have to be removed.
