Version 4 Race Bike

Post by Mike_SS »

Well after seven months away from the track I am now frantically trying to finish what will will be version 4 of my Yamaha race bikes. Version 3 was a pretty well sorted YZF750 which I have now loaned to a mate to race this year. I am booked in for a coaching day, a track day and a 2 day race meeting in a week's time. Starting to get nervous :)

I had acquired a few bits and pieces over the last couple of years so I put them into this new version.

So basically it is a YZF 750 with..

FZR1000 motor
Home made 4-2-1 pipe
Factory Pro Config 3 carby kit with BMC pods
Marvic wheels
Brembo rotors and calipers on front
Brembo caliper and custom made rotor on rear
WP 43mm forks
WP rear shock
Shark race glass
Assorted frame and swingarm gussets

The motor is standard out of a road bike but depending on how it all feels I may look into some work on it later. (have pretty much all the bits to do 1040 6 speed)

Nearly done..

Look likes a brand name whore :)

Next year is a long way off :)

I have ridden a total of 100kms on the road and 0kms on the track in the last seven months. I'll be happy just to get through next weekend!

(Had to decide beside between local round here next week or Phillip Island the week after. A couple of the Qld pre modern boys are making the trip down. Was a tough call but PI is a long way to go with a new bike and no fitness  )

Hey Mike,

:help

Not sure if you're receiving the coaching or if you're giving it. In the instance you were giving it, I'd love to know or even read a book (suggestions welcomed) on how to get my knee down to the tarmac without coming off of the machine. I'm an inch away really but obviously don't feel too comfortable throwing a knee down on the street without a puck and track time is difficult for me to get in. Really the track is the only place I'd actually like to apply knee down so I'm not sure what good the info will do me rarely seeing the track but, I really would like to know.

Thanks in advance.
Michael

Basement is done now, 850 finished and gone...
Gotta get the new siding up on the house.
Fixing the FZ1 up, cleaning up garage and then I might even begin

I dig the suspension/brakes/wheels. That is what I wanted to do to my bike.
Can you guys find affordable Brembos down there?
There is always free cheese in a mouse trap.

Very tidy indeed, job well done there Mike :)

I know what you mean about the lack of seat time, I just de-registered the SV until the end of October...yep, getting old now.

We'll be back for next years BSFOS (with a new rider on the FZR), so we'll look forward to following you around the track.

Most definetely not giving it :) The coaching days are limited to 20 riders and are fairly casual. I will be using it to make sure the bike stays together and to get used to riding again. :) Knee down...no real tips just happens eventually :)
or maybe..

I got all my brembo bits from dream-duc on ebay. (Not those rotors though. I pinched them off another bike) I thought the prices were pretty good :)

They are just the ones you can see ;)
getting old now.
Know the feeling..has taken a long time to heal and will make a call on future riding plans after I get back out there next week. :)

Great coaching book is "A twist of the wrist", Vol 1 & 2, Keith Code. They are probly a bit old school now, but contain solid info on how to gradually increase your performance.
Simple things like having $10 to spend on a corner, if you spend $7 on braking, you only have $3 left on mid corner and exit.

Agree with you 100% on those books stan, unfortunatley I tend to go into overdraft on the occasional corner...
