We have found my lost power!!

Post by sbutler »

The FZRs been on the dyno today & we have found the power it had lost.
First run 96.1hp that was with standard jets & modded air snorkle. So in effect the mod cost 30hp!
Went from 122.5s to 140 mains.
Lifted the needles full up, & now its putting out 126.9hp from 124.7. So a gain. [all be it small]

Its still way to lean from about 4000 to 10000rpm. but then keeps making power untill rev limit, & thats were the extra hp is. It use to drop off at about 10500rpm, but doesnt do that anymore. So if we can get some more fuel in there it should be good.

So its a good & bad story, really.
We are looking at about 135+ when we get the right needle jets in there & we are looking at maybe having to change the needles.
So was it worth the trouble? I'd say NO
But having more power right through the rev range isnt a bad thing either, I suppose. ? :? :? :?

If your lean through 4 to 10K, you may need to look at the taper of the needles, it sounds as though you are on the right track

A highly tapered needle opens the hole in the emulsion tube way quickeras they draw up

well done on the HP gain

The good thing Stan, is all the runs [about 12] it did with no sign of the fuel issues of the past!!!! All the runs were done & gave us something to look at, rather than chase fuel starvation, & flooding. So I think Ive fixed all that shit that made my race weekends such a drama.

Tuning now, only tuning. Thank god..

Excellent - up top is where you want the power for track work I guess?
I have always wondered how a FZR would fare with the airbox snorkel
opened up. Throttle response/pickup will probably be better too.
Best luck with finding a good needle for it, and glad to hear that
you had no trouble with the fuel system.

Thanks for the offer sickle44. But at this stage we are gonna keep going with what we have. Needle jets & a bigger main should do the trick..

Then Ive got some rear shock tuning to do, fit a new rear slick, pay my entry fees for the 5/7/09 & away we go!
I can tell you something, if it all goes well, I wont be holding back anymore. It'll be get the hell out of my way!!!! :banana

Can you get different needle jets for these bikes? I was under the impression you are only able to obtain a replacement?

Well we have finished on the dyno. Result 131.1hp!! 6 & a bit over what we had standard.
So Ive found a little over 6 rwhp & 3 ft lb of torque. & that was with the clutch starting to slip. So the air box mod does work.
Do I think its worth it NO
Would I do it again NO
Its just to much stuffing around.
1 in dyno time.
2 in just time chaging needle jets, main jets dismantling carbs at least a dozen times.etc etc
3 its not a matter of just modding the snorkle. We found we got better power with half the snorkle with half the snorkle retained.
Just a lot of mucking around for very little gain.

My next mission is fixing the clutch slip. Which starts at 9400rpm Had the clutch not sliped we think we could have broken the 135hp target.
Again The bike ran about 25 runs without any sign of fuel problems, So thats fixed.

that's so odd that you'd be up to 140 or past in the mains as even stock main jets here are still rich.

The final wash up was. We refitted half the snorkel. We just couldnt get a good power cerve with out it.
140 mains.
Bigger needle jets
Needle returned to centre postion. From full up.
Now I have an engine that pulls better then standard, that inturn now makes the clutch slip. So ive ordered some EBC clutch springs that are 15% stronger than OEM items. Going back to Minaral oil as it burns the 5W40 synthetic. & that should do it. I hope.
Like I said, its a hell of a lot of drama for only a few HP & torque. should pick up a few more when I stop the clutch slip.

Are you sure the clutch slip is induced by the springs and not the slave?
Or the frictions themselves?

Have you done the slave test?

K,
You know you've got weak springs, frictions are good, K, but have you also done the slave test?

Do not be in a rush to squash the snorkel mod!
you went from 124.7 hp 131.1 hp a little over 5.3% increase, motogp teams pay in excess 1Million to get an extra hp. You also gained more torque, every racer wants hp and torque. The thing is you got extra hp that is what matters, unfortunately it cost a lot of dyno-time.

why do you think teams spend fortunes on R&D and pay top dollar for engineers, relate to the old adage!

You want Hp, how much do you want to spend, the slipping clutch I would also put down to Synthetic oil as it has friction modifiers in it, however you could have had weak springs.

I would just like to say that on my Genesis I went +1 on all the mains and raised the needles for a huge difference.

Regards
Ozzyfzr

PS I know the bike is now sold to Mike_SS and wish him well with the bike!!!
