Arr yes ive seen this before. First it starts with a track day, then you want better handling, after that some slicks would be good, then a weight reduction program for the bike, on & on & on ha ha ha I know were this is heading..

On your next outing.... take a little tape and put it in the bottom part of the tach....... say covering up 0-4000 rpm. Try to keep the needle visible at all times (of course after you get some new shoes for the scoot)

Yes with new tyres and new suspension I should be able to use a little bit
more of the stonking power that the EXUP has.
For me the whole day there was just learning the lines on the
track and trying to keep smooth and not upset the bike. I was not
good enough yet to really give the FZR motor a hard time.
But more track time, handling upgrades for the bike (starting with
tyres), and a day at superbike school, are coming.

You can never underestimate these old bikes. Always full of surprises. Looks like you had a great time and have reaped the rewards of the gained knowledge and extensive research Cam. Congrats on ya.

I remember a test of the new GSXR750 on the track and the hack preferred it to the GSXR1000 because the revs were higher for the same power (remember the new GSXR750 has pretty much the same top end power as a FZR1K) round 9/10th of the track. Reckoned the GSXR1K was too lunatic at the revs he wanted to carry.

It's not just about the power. The same bike at the same speed on the same corner with one gear less and more revs is more stable. Try to get used to having the engine up above 6-7000rpm on a constant throttle, not accelerating, just moving. Then roll on gently and roll off gently. It's a bit mad at first but you get used to it. At first I couldn't figure out what you could be talking about, but then
I realised that you must be referring to the stability created by
the crankshaft and gearbox shafts spinning at higher rpms. I can see
that spinning the crankshaft twice as fast would cause it to resist
the turning of the bike more.
You know in all the years of riding I've never heard anyone mention this?
It's probably because they're all trying to get the rider to be smooth on
the throttle (which is easy at low revs). I've never had a problem being
gentle on the throttle, sometimes I'm just too gentle and don't
get the power on right!
I think this is something I'm going to try next time I'm at the track, thanks!

Broadford has changed a bit since I raced there last in the late 80s early 90s. I still remember my first C grade race there with Hartwell – absolutely manic! I think half the field crashed and the rest blew their bikes up! I remember drafting this old RS125 going up the back strait hill and he seized solid right in front of me! I don’t know how I missed him. At the end of the main strait, on that very lap, 4 guys crashed in front of me! I think there was about 6 of us left at the end and 30 probably started! We only did 5 laps I think…
