FZR1000 Oil Usage Theory
FZR1000 Oil Usage Theory
My FZR1000 (1994 with 24.5K miles) seemed to need small amounts of oil added to it to keep it at the full mark in the sight glass. It was not consistent usage and didn't seem to follow any specific pattern. Lately it has not needed any oil added to it. The oil is suppose to be checked with the bike in a level standing position. I noticed if the bike is standing 90 degrees perpendicular to the ground, with the oil level at the full mark, it only takes a few degrees lean to lower the oil level to the bottom of the sight glass. These few degrees lean look like the bike is standing straight up but a critical eye will detect a slight lean. So here's my theory (does not apply to bikes that are losing/burning oil due to leaks or mechanical problems) ...
You check the oil and there is a slight lean to the bike. You fill the oil level to the full mark. Due to the lean you actually overfilled the bike. The bike burns off the excess oil until it reaches the full mark. Next time you you check the bike at the slight lean angle it appears low again. So you repeat the cycle and it appears the bike is using oil. The amount being dependent on the lean angle when you check it.
Now check the bike without any lean. You fill the oil level to the full mark. Next time you check the bike without any lean the oil level is still at the full mark. It appears the bike is not using any oil.

Don

Re: FZR1000 Oil Usage Theory
That's why I use a rear stand when I check the oil in mine. Either that or I sit on it and make someone else look.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
There are some who call me........Tim?
Top Speed = Mach 0.197 or so...
1994 FZR 1000 <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
