FZR 1000 exup oil change procedure question.

Post by exup234 »

Hi,

I have just carried out an oil change on my 1990 exup and need clarification on the procedure.

My Haynes manual says that there is a "gallery bolt" located on the corner of the cylinder head, below and to the rear of the camchain tunnel. This bolt should be backed off and the engine fired up and run at idle for no more than 1 minute, until oil is seen to emerge from the gallery bolt thread. The manual says "not to remove the gallery bolt - "just to back it off"

This sounds like a procedure to bleed trapped air from the top end oilways. I removed the tank and airbox last night, but could not locate the galery bolt!!

I asked my Yamaha dealer today and he says he has never backed off any "gallery bolt" in all the exups he has serviced in his time as a mechanic.

He says the Haynes manual is nonsense on this procedure.

He says just drain out the old oil and fill up with 2700ml for oil change only and 3000ml for oil/filter change.

Who is correct? - Haynes or the Yam mechanic?

Obviously, I am keen to avoid any chance of ruining my motor!

Paul.

I had the same question when I changed my oil for the first time too. Personally, I just said the hell with Haynes and just drained the oil like normal (haven't had any problems). I wouldn't mind knowning why they recommend this just out of curiosity, but IMO I don't think you should worry about.
"I have come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass...
and I'm all out of bubble-gum."

ditto Orionburn. But I don't have a manual, so I didn't read this step.

Tim
<img src="http://img69.photobucket.com/albums/v20 ...
Has anyone seen my keys?
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers

Haynes Bog Roll....

Post by Exupilot »

Haynes manuals are OK for spec's and if you don't have a clue, but they are notorious for info like this. If you have ever read the car ones you'll know what I mean.
Eg: Changing the clutch... remove the rear seat.....lol
I've never done anything but change the oil and filter (who the hell ever just changes the oil?) and I've never opened and screws/bolts/pins etc, and no I didn't need to remove the seat or tail light first....

Rob

It seems that the haynes manual mirrors the Yamaha shop manual. According to the Yamaha manual:

1. change the filter with every other oil change.
2. crack the oil gallery screw upon initial startup and verify that oil starts flowing shortly thereafter (minute?). This lets you know that there are no problems and minimizes the amount of time that the cams run without oil supply.

I personally can't imagine that the air pocket would be that harmful considering the amount of journal surface available for the given load, but it offers peace of mind.

Filter change?

Post by orionburn »

Ok...so what do you guys usually do? Change filter & oil every time or do filter at every other oil change? I'm coming up on a oil change (changed filter & oil last time).
"I have come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass...
and I'm all out of bubble-gum."

Personally, I do both every oil change. Better to be safe.

Tim
<img src="http://img69.photobucket.com/albums/v20 ...
Has anyone seen my keys?
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers

Gallery Bolt

Post by djalbin »

I don't bother with the gallery bolt. I don't take off any more fairing than needed to change the oil (just the one lower left side panel). But I do fill the new oil filter (1994 FZR1000) with fresh oil before I put it on. This provides oil flow on the initial startup (no initial cavitation). You can really tell the difference on initial startup between a dry filter and an oil filled filter. I change the filter everytime I change the oil.
Don

oil filter

Post by Exupilot »

Good point Don, and a quick smear round the seal with oil/grease before it goes on, stop's the bugger welding itself on for next time. We had a kid at our work used to put filters on dry with a strap, took me 2 hours to get 3 filters off with a breaker bar and a 7' piece of tube.... my, he was popular....
I also have the habbit of spinning it over with the coils disconnected to get the oil round first if I've had the engine down & I never change just the oil, for £10 for a filter is it worth it?

Rob

Gallery bolt.

Post by exup234 »

Thanks for all the feedback so far - it is much appreciated!

Can anyone tell me exactly where the gallery bolt is on a '90 exup 1000. Like I said at the start of the thread, I tried to locate it based on the location given in the Haynes manual, but failed to identify it.

Paul.
