House Burned
We had some great luck and our house was burned yesterday! You'll recall we're building a new house and have to demo our old one.
We moved out in early February and just received our demo permit two weeks ago. What a headache--you have to have all the utilities turned off and all wires and pipes disconnected, then get a county inspection of disconnected pipes and a letter from each utility confirming the disconnect. (The utilities are quick to send a bill but ask them to confirm they turned off your gas and water is a headache.)
I also needed an asbestos inspection, and yes, they found a little asbestos in the caulking on the roof flashing--that had to be removed by a licensed contractor. More time and money and paperwork.
All this before you can get a demo permit.
Then with demo permit and asbestos certification in hand I went to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Training Academy. It was perfect timing--they had a class graduating the next week and were looking for a home for their final "training" exercise. I was glad to oblige.
So on the 18th the academy torched our place--several times. The were practicing three things--hose deployment (getting the hoses were they needed them), emergency egress--getting people in and out when passages were blocked by flames by going through florrs, walls and roof;, and extinguishing "small controlled fires" as they termed it. I was told they set five fires in different places at different times.
Unfortunately I was working and couldn't swing by and watch until lunch--a lot of the action was over but from the pics you can get a sense of the devastation.
This is noting compared to the inside where the ceilings and insulation are on the floor, walls and floors seared and blistering, and water dripping everywhere. I was in a rush to get it boarded up after work on Wednesday (they are very strict that I have to do it--safety issue) but I'll get in this weekend and get more pics.
The remaining structure is scheduled to be demolished and removed next week. Then construction can finally begin!

Rob,
If the house completely burns to the ground then I think your local fire department needs more training!
I was told they try and set several fires as part of the training. After looking it over it appears they set six separate fires, one in each bedroom, one in the kitchen and one in the living room. My understanding is they'd send a team in, put one fire out, start another and send a another team in, etc.
I didn't see any fire damage to the framing and our house is brick and block, so even if the interior were completely burned the exterior walls should still be standing.
I talked to some neighbors over the weekend--one woman said she pulled her young kids out of school so they could watch. Another told me that there were about 30 people and another 20 kids, many with lawn chairs set up across the street. I was sorry I missed all the fun.
I have some more pics to post and will try and get them up this evening.

New House is Done
You'll recall we were demolishing our house and donated it to the fire department last April. They used it for training new fireman. Well the new house is done! We moved in just before Christmas but I only recently got some pics posted.
Street view--when the weather warms well get the driveway fixed.
My favorite room. I need to get my son's 240SX out. (Blew the airbags so the dash is coming out). Notice the reinforced swingarm on my engineless YZF750. (Motor is still with Dutchman racing, 9 months now!)
Kitchen, still missing some new appliances. I think I need a big compressor before a microwave.
Family room from the upstairs balcony.
More pics at http://rudoff.com/newhouse/
Still lots of projects to do--a big unfinished basement to finish, deck off the back, re-plumb and open the pool And of course now we have to pay for it all.
I'm not retiring anytime soon.

I'm ready to ride. I promised myself I'd get back to the track this year.
By design I skipped the track last year, but by the end of the summer I was in withdrawal. Not that it mattered--I didn't have a bike to take to the track. My YZF750 motor has been at Dutchman Racing since May. I'm confident it will be a wicked motor once done, Dave is great at making promises and offering reassurances but I've seen very little progress. It seems he treats this business like a hobby.
So I picked up a naked 2000 SV650 just a few weeks ago, trading my '99 EX250 and some cash. I'm mildly prepping the SV for the track. I picked up some Traxxion built forks from the WERA site, got some sliders and clip-ons. I'm looking for a late model 636 rear shock and some rearsets. I'm also ready to order jets and the 2003 SV cams (more lift and duration). The jets, cams and some air box surgery are good for a well documented 7-10 rwhp (from 70 stock to 80).
I plan to keep the SV street legal. My newly licensed son will ride this too.
Unfortunately cash is a little tight now. (I pay for all my bike stuff with side income). I was all set to start a new Phase 1 clinical trail for an Ebola vaccine that would have paid for a summer of track days. Then the FDA put it on hold. Now I'm scrambling to bring in some extra money.

No eggs to donate. Had a vasectomy, Well, I've still go an extra kidney.
