I've just had a ride on a GSXR1000

Post by exupturbo »

My boss has a K4 GSXR1000 with a race can and was daft enough to let me have a go
First impressions:-
You sit very high up with all your weight over the bars and being a LOT lighter than the Exup with steeper geometry it turns so quick it feels almost unstable.
The fairing/screen gives next to no wind protection.
BUT it does go like hell you have to rev it hard to make it go but boy does it go. I had an indicated 165mph in 5th gear with one more gear to go and it was still pulling hard, the crap wind protection meant I had to lie on the tank like a teenager trying to get 50mph out of a SS50 and to be honest ruined the ride.
Would I swap my Exup for a new GSXR?
No chance, it just made me more determined to get mine spot on. My old crate may be 16 years old but is more comfortable, has better wind protection and gives me much more confidence in the bends.
Perhaps I'm getting old

Mark

K4

Post by Ton up »

I had a go on a K4 a few weeks ago. Funny, but my impressions were very different from yours. I stongly suspect that your comparing the GSXR to your turbo FZR, am I right?

So what did I think, comparing it to my (almost) stock standard 1989 FZR1000W? Amazing power, anywhere any time. Trust me, any bike where you can easily power wheelie in 1st from 4k revs has enough bottom end, Exupturbo is probably just used to being spoilt! Lots of torque in the bottom end- it's interesting that a few V-twin fanatics here have been shocked to find that the GSXR1000 has as much or even more bottom end than their V-twins. Infact, being pretty light I couldn't really open it up until I hit third. Massive top end, obviously significantly more powerful than my FZR as my brain was having trouble coping with the extra acceleration- it's heaps quicker.

Much lighter and easier to turn, flicks from side to side much quicker than the FZR. I had less impression of speed for some reason. But the biggest thing for me was the brakes. Holy crap they've got some power!

The riding position was fairly similar to my bike, but I have 10mm shorter dogbones. There's more room to move around on the seat- something I've found with every late model sports bike I've ridden. The seat itself is a tad plank like for my boney butt.

So would I buy one? Not sure. Why? At the moment I'm not good enough for it. I'm not sure if I ever could be. On the roads I ride, I think the 750 or even the 600 would be a better choice.

Is it 'better' than the FZR1000? Well, if you remember that the FZR was designed to be the ultimate big bore SPORTS BIKE- not a tourer, a cruiser, drag bike, posers bike, or sports tourer, not comfy with adequate wind protection etc, then OF COURSE IT IS!

K4

Post by Yoniboi »

From what I've been reading in the biking presss the K5 is heaps better than the K4. It's a acompetely new bike, and a british mag (Fast Bikes) which has MotoGP riders as it's test team reckons that the stock K5 is better than any tuned/tricked R1,ZX10 etc that they've ever tried.

Sounds great....but...tomorrow my son's on holiday with his Granny, so my pregnant wife and I are going out for the day on the EXUP 1000 to a beautiful medieval town about 50km from our house that we still haven't visited. I suppose you could do it on a K5 but I don't think I would. Oh yeah, and one big advantage of owning a €2000 bike.... I don't sweat it everytime I park the bike.

John<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... iker_3.gif ALT=":riding">
