That track looks great! I've been out of touch and didn't even now they were building a new track in the state. The last time I was racing in Shelton they had an old airfield with cones for turns (back in the early '90's)! It sucked! The only bikes I've ridden over there in the last decade had knobb...

Thanks Rush. I feel your pain about the weather. This was a long, cold winter. The paint turned out OK from 10 feet away (with your eyes squinting). Actually, its not too bad but you can't avoid the orange peel texture when its so cold. I put it together and spent Sunday trying to figure out why it ...

I don't know but it takes a lot more coats of paint when you're using a rattle can in a 40 degree garage. Between sanding drips and doing multiple light coats, I have finally managed to get the body work painted. I'll bolt it on and try to fire the YZF600 up this weekend. I'll post picks. http://i13...

Here's an update. I was pretty busy over the last 6 months but I managed to pickup a couple of spare motors, one of which had a fresh transmission and topend (it had broken it's chain and chewed up its cases with only a few thousand miles on it - a good reminder to maintain your chain!). This allowe...

Hey guys, I just put my shock and rear wheel back on and I greased the crap out of everything with some moly grease (it was what I had in my grease gun). I wiped the excess off of course but I packed the needle bearings with it in the swing arm and in the shock pivots. I recently learned to read and...

I cheaped out and rattle canned them. Only cost about $15 for the paint (glossy black tractor paint, seemed appropriate), though there was an hour or two in cleaning, pressure washing, sanding and cleaning them again. Thanks for the tips, Stig. It seems to have worked well. I guess I won't really kn...

I'm leaning towards the cheap option since it is a $600 bike (or it was before I started throwing dollars and hours at it!). Besides, I don't think I'll be missing a lot of valuable beach time around here for the next month. Our forecast calls for crappy weather for the foreseeable future. I could s...

Thanks you guys! Stig had just what I was thinking about trying. I considered having them blasted and powdered coated but the cost is a little more than I wanted to spend and if Stig's technique doesn't work for me I can also go back to it. Matador, thanks for the long write up! That is some good in...

Painting the chassis and wheels
I pulled the engine on my YZF600R for a rebuild and I couldn't let the chassis alone. It had a few dings so I decided to fix(?) the ding and put some paint on it. This bike has the painted steel frame so I figured I could clean, sand and clean it again and it would be ready for paint. I used Duplico...

Thanks for the invite Doc. I'm going to take you up on that. I've been dying to see your shop. I saw your website so I know where it is. Are you around next Saturday? I also would love to have you look at the crankshaft. One of my racing buddies says a crank journal polish might be a good idea. I've...

Thanks for looking Dr. Jim. I appreciate your advice. The pictures are a lttle blurry but the first two pictures are of the same matching dogs and slots. The worst wear on those gears is less than a 1/16" round over (can you tell what material I normally work with?). Is this something that can be ma...

Transmission rebuild, how much dog wear is acceptable?
Hey everyone, I pulled my YZF 600R engine apart to fix the tranny. This was a little bit of a leap of faith since I bought it cheap and the previous owner had some wiring issues that prevented me from actually starting it to test the transmission but it had some definite problems. A few of the gears...

Thanks for the tips Dr Jim. That sounds a little beyond my skill level (though I used make some pretty bitchin' plaster of paris sculptures back in grade school). Having seen my learning curve on 2-stroke cylinder porting, I'll stick to a flapper wheel on my exhaust headers. I have no intention of g...

Cleaning up the ports
Hey everyone, I just picked up a '95 YZF 600R for a song (a $600 song!). It has a bad 2nd gear and a little fairing damage (already picked up the new pieces so no problem there). The only other other problem is the turqouise and purple paint job. I'm thinking of tackling the tranny rebuild myself. W...

Dr. Jim you must be one of the uncommon masters of tuning a two-stroke twin. Soon it will be a lost art. I imagine you probably had to earn that knowledge the hard way (by that I mean lots of pistons and cylinders!). I read about Turner (TTS Racing) drag racing his RDs and making that kind of power ...
