Bike Database...

Post by boz »

I realise that there are quite a few 'sources' for bike info around, but this one is a bit different... www.biketome.com is based on a wiki. For those that don't know what a wiki is it is essentially an online knowledge sharing system, where you can contribute and change information as necessary. In terms of a bike database it means you can alter stats (in case the original source got it wrong), add opinions, etc. Wiki's have proven to be very successful in sharing and growing knowledge of things. (case : <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page" ... has something to say about anything - more comprehensive than ANY encyclopedia around!. Even the former editor in chief of Encylopedia Brittanica compared it and Wikipedia, stating that the latter was a "faith based encyclopedia".) Yes it can be updated to reflect innacurrate info, but the idea behind a wiki is that the 'masses' will ensure that the info is correct (and the admin/mods will also ensure that abuse does not occur...)

Biketome is also wanting to be more than just a bike database - it is also encouraging riders to provide tips and strategies to riding, and also maintenance tips.

Anyways - biketome was just started/launched by a friend of mine yesterday, and he is seeking to have people start contributing to it. It has already been seeded with bike information based on a few other bike databases so it is at par with normal bike databases, but as I said the main source of inspiration for this site is to allow riders to comment on their experiences with bikes or riding in general. He is receptive to design suggestions, so if you notice anything that you think could be implemented better, or should be implemented, post suggestions here and I will pass them on (I have already mentioned being able to search for bikes by cc's).

To provide input - you need to register (use something like www.dodgeit.com if you are worried about spam) and then you can update any / all pages on the site. I would suggest providing input into the bikes that you have or are riding. Anything that other riders may find of use...

As is said on the site - the golden rule of using a wiki is : Don’t like something? Change it! (And if like the site, could you could share the site around - a wiki becomes better as more and more people use it)
