So, I been thinkin....

I've been thinking about it and realized that I tend
to find that to a certain extent; the more bikes I
have the less I tend to ride. Over the years I have
found that having just one solid reliable bike makes
for the most consistent riding. That's why the best
thing is to just have one bike. And it should be a
large solid stable highway capable / comfortable one
I feel.

For the street I mean, because a bike for the dirt is
always good to have too. Of course; it's more fun
riding in the woods with somebody so what I do is to
keep two dirt bikes in case whoever is available doesn't
have one or didn't bring it over with them. Three is
actually better; in case they show up with someone.

And I like to have a bike for sort trips too.
Something lighter, and more maneuverable than a heavy
cruiser; easy to park on sidewalks when it's crowded
and so forth.

Well, and it's always good to have something small for
just buzzing around the neighborhood - running up to
the hardware store for a few screws or a saw blade, or
going to the post office, or around the corner for coffee.

Something else that comes in Really handy is a scooter -
with the foot boards and leg shields it's great if the
rain has just stopped or the roads are slushy in the early
or late winter. And a lot of times women will ride a
scooter where they would not be enticed to ride a
motorcycle. So if you have two scooters your wife and her
girlfriends can go riding together.

And since I do all the work on the bike, it's good to have
a parts bike for it. Well for each of them I guess would
really be the best thing.

So anyway; that's why it's best to just have one bike.
. . uhhhh . . . well; not just one, but certainly very
few . . . Just cut it to the bare necessities is what I am
trying to say. No sense in having too many - it's just
counter-productive in general.

And you can see; that is what makes me the superior
motorcyclist - realizing that fact. And that is why I only
have, let me see here . . . oh . . ahhh . . . three, four,
and those three make eight, and then there's . . . ahhhhh . . . thirty three.

Uhhhh . . . well never mind about that - the important
thing is to keep it so a minimum. So it's 'manageable'

I fully agree with your reasoning - one bike to do everything, funny thing is - when I was young (along time ago) in the 70's, I tend to recall that one bike could actually do everything!!!!

I have great memories of my Suzuki T500 - indestructible engine, long wheel base resulting in stable handling, great for commuting touring, a bit of scratching around the hills - and being able to handle some excellent trail riding and a few jumps as well...oh to be young stupid and broke again...nah I'll stick with middle aged and semi responsible - it's much more fun.

Come to think of it - I did some quite long tours on my 2 stroke 125 trail bike as well.

I guess that each of the bikes I had at the time seemed powerful to a young rider and capable of taking on the world (do you remember your first ride on a bike and how a 50cc motor was almost uncontrolably powerful...)

Just as well I'm going racing today, I'm starting to sound rather old and sad here.

The dilemma of us all. What we really want is a "transformers" bike, luggage and comfy passenger seat for 1000miles, then when we reach the mountains press the button and *whirr clank clank* it's a sportbike, then into town it's a streetfighter...

of course some of that technology is already available! Have you seen Mission Impossible (I forget whether it was 1 or 2) where the Triumphs are fitted with tyres that automatically retract or extend knobs depending on whether the bike is on dirt?...

I'm tempted for my next bike to be an FZ1, which is as close as I can get to being a comfy touring bike and a lightweight sports bike at the same time. Of course there's one other thing, I'd like it to cost $10,000 less then I can afford one

hmmm,s having more than one bike meanz? less riding. probably due to the fact, that your always thinking about wich one you want to ride.

And the sad thing is that there would probably still be bikes leftover that wouldn't get ridden....
