More fun...

Post by orionburn »

Well yet another wonderful night for me...

Was working on the car last night to replace the thermo and oh-lucky-me happened to have one of the bolts shear in half. So, was forced to ride the bike in today since I couldn't get the bolt out last night (will have to tap & rethread tonight). Been avoiding riding since the chain has very little life left in it. So this morning I fire it up and notice one of the brake lights is out. Pull the seat to check the bulb and see that it's broken. BUT...what happened is some how the socket slipped out and the light was laying against the back of the plastic mounting holes. Well, Mr. Bulb got hot enough to melt a good chunk of the hole so now the socket can't screw back in.

Oh the joys of being me...
Nate
87 FZR 1000

We got clearence, Clarence.

Welcome ladies & gents to the next installment of: "Why I'm a dumb@$$"

Since it's been snowing like mad here, I realized "oh yes it is winter now" and decided to get off my butt and start doing some put-off work to the bike.

Have been planning on paint job and all that so was going to pull the tank & bodywork off. Thought I'd get the bike running a for a few days to make sure everything is still running fine. So let the tank be and went to work on pulling the clutch slave off to put new seals on it. Got the bike going, pulled slave off and called it a night.

Get home from work the next day and figure I'll get going on the bike right away. Head out to the garage and go to get the bike fired. Sitting on it and get her running. And I don't mean dripping fast, I mean it looks like somebody knocked over a quart of oil on the floor. Immediately shut the bike down and jump off. Then I notice that the clutch pushrod is laying on the floor (see above: CLUTCH SLAVE REMOVED). Figured I might as well post on here so I can b!tch about the night I had.

Over the weekend I noticed some electrical woes. Front brake switch didn't seem to be working and bulbs were acting haywire. On top of that my high beams stopped working.

So, when I would switch the from low to high the lights actually turned off. Now I know how sensetive the wiring is on these bikes, so figured maybe (though odd) if one high beam filament burned out then maybe that would cause the other one to not work as well.

I was in the left handlebar switch housing a week or so ago when my turn signal switch was acting funky. Thought maybe a wire was getting pinched and that was causing the high beam failure. Welp, one of the screws stripped out and said the hell with the switch. In order to get to the bulbs you have to pull the entire upper fairing off to get to them. Go through the hassle of pulling it off and check the bulbs. The right bulb had a big black mark on it, but none of the filaments seemed to be broken. Head down to the parts store and pick up new bulbs. Get back, put the bulbs in and nothing. Doing the same as before.

So now I know it's wiring. Decide to try to get the screw out one more time. Took some work but finally got it to come out. Pull the housing apart and whadyaknow. Broken wire at the switch. Got the soldering gun out and got it working again.

So because of one pesky little screw I ended up wasting all that time taking the cowl off. Oh what fun...
Nate - 87 FZR1000
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/ ...
Have you seen my fairing? Well, I figure this little story would make a worthwhile addition to the thread.... :popcorn

Headed down to a friend's house for the weekend (good hour away from me). About halfway down the bike started to sputter out on me. Ok, no big deal, switch to reserve. Make the switch and bike still wants to keep stalling out. Ok, still no big deal, has happened before. Get about a mile down the road from that point and it stalls out on me. Pull off to the side and try to start it back up. Fires up with a nice shotgun-esque backfire.

Get back on the road...starts doing it again...and again...and again. Fup I say, now this is a concern. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how all of a sudden things are going to hell. Fuel filter isn't old...maybe the pump? Electrical problem somewhere? (on a FZR...yeah right  )

Nurse it over to the next town and pull into a gas station. Wondering if maybe it's some bad gas left in the tank. Maybe when it started getting low I had some crap in there that managed to clog up the pump...I don't know. Fill up and bike fires up fine. Get back onto the road and.....same thing happens again. Luckily I manage to make it the last 20 miles to his house though this probably took 30 minutes to do. Run, stall, run, sputter, run, sputter, stall, run, stall....on and on this goes. Get to his house and pull off a tail pannel to check some wiring. Fire the bike back up and runs fun while sitting still. Turn off the ignition and go to pull the key out...and the key housing seems like it wants to come out with it. "I wonder..." me says, and turn the bike back on. While it's running I jiggle the key, and sure enough, bike cuts out right away.

Upon further inspection I find out that the two screws that are supposed to hold the ignition down have managed to run away. Probably in a better place with my fairing now. Anyway, with my new found edumacation in engineering I grab a role of electrical tape and "secure" the ignition down.

Granted I am a bit concerned that somebody has been fupping with the bike. However, given my history with the bike because of the previous owner I really wouldn't be surprised if he only used one screw to hold the ignition down when he replaced it, which had been done shortly before I bought the bike. Either way I had been meaning on investing in some security for the bike so will be doing that this week to be safe.

Bike does run fine after my "fix" :banana

www.bikebolts.com

They have a complete kit for the FZR1000 (and tons of other bikes) with fastners, well nuts and all the body screws/bolts. You can even get them in different colors. The stainless "complete" kit is less than 40 bucks WITH shipping!

Well look at it this way - if he's seeing thing larger than what they actually are it's a good thing. At least that way he can tell what the hell he's working on.

<------- Is that better bro? LOL I was messing around with resizing on photobucket and made it a tad small, deleted and reentered and resized, got it right on the first try, sometimes a challenge to me when there arent hand tools involved (hand tools, I USUALLY get it right the first try) LOL :banana
