Broken frames on FZ1's

I was down at one of the leading frame repair shops in NZ today and he had two FZ1's in there for the same reason - broken frames.

Both bikes had been involved in minor accidents, and both had broken in the same place - the weld between the frame / cylinder mounting and the upper rear engine mounting.

This is definatley an area to keep an eye on if your looking at getting one of these.

A quick google on FZ1 broken frame found this:

It may only be on earlier bikes, but check it out all the same.

This issue mostly affected the '06 and some early '07 models. At that it was a tiny percentage that had the issue. My '06 FZ1 is perfect ;)

There was some less-ideal welding on the early ones, I checked out the part number and the frame has been superseded for a minor change between 06 and 07 models, the old frame is no longer available. I am guessing that they changed the weld style.

If my 09 hits something in the front, hard enough to break the frame at
that weld, then insurance can have it and pay out the loan; I'll ride the FZR
or get a Ninja1000S. FZ1 is great but with the new job I could get by without
it (and without the repayments). :)

That's good news, but interestingly enough we do seem to have a few breaking frames at the moment, maybe the combination of time and use has started to aggravate the weld issue in some bikes after all this time.
