FZR Genesis-Exup Cylinder bank angle Myth

Post by spook »

"Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see."
Edgar Allan Poe

Here is something interesting for all of you like myself who believed the FZR 750-1000 genesis and the FZR 750-1000 ex-up where of different cylinder bank angle and therefore not interchangeable.

The other day I was cleaning up, and chucked an YZF750 top case and an 88 FZR1000 genesis engine on the bench and then ‘noticed’ something….

There is no difference between the Genesis and the Exup externally. All engine mounting points (other than cylinder head mount points) and cylinder bank angle are the same.

Here is the photographic evidence…lol.

Laying Flat on the bench all dowels etc removed:

Studs and deck angle... where are the rest of those studs hiding… :)

So there you go!

Edit: The possible reason for the said angle difference between the FZR genesis and the Exup, may be explained if Yamaha rotated the engine within the frame to give more front wheel clearance, as Bimota did when they used the black engine in the YB6. Though I have not confirmed this.

Very interesting. All the articles I ever read about the '89 FZR1000 said that Yamaha had designed new crankcases that only tilted the cylinders forward 35° instead of the 87-88 FZR1000's 45°. I did read about Bimota tilting the engine to basically achieve the same thing. Go figure...
